If I could find a lawyer with any balls, I'd start a class action suit against state governments for discrimination! Christonacrutch - cigarettes here have gone up $20.00 a carton in less than 2 years!!!!
Oh, the other "sin tax" favorite - beer & booze!
First of all, I want to tell you that you are not a horrible terrible person because you smoke. And polluting the world comes in many forms.
My husband is a smoker, and we don't talk a whole lot about it, cause he knows I'm scared to death of him dying young because of it. More than dying, I don't want our children to have to watch him suffer and die the very way he and I and all his siblings and neices and nephews watched his mom die. But in the last two weeks he has called me twice, very upset about the cost of cigs changeing. Though I tell him, that I can't complain with him, I really do think that how they decide to tax things isn't all that right. I think there needs to be some logic. And taxing booze and cigs isn't really logic. Many very poor people are smoking, and they are not going to quit, and that money is coming out of what feeds their kids. Thats not logic to me.
I recently heard about 3 hand smoke, I'm not sure about that, sounds a bit crazy, but I don't know. I do know though that it angers me greatly to have parents smoking in their homes or their cars with their kids having to be there. But that has nothing to do with taxing.

My wife smoked for a long time, then chewed Nicorette, and now she's off nicotine altogether, and it's a great gain in health, comfort, and money.
Tobacco is more addictive and dangerous than some illegal drugs. As for poor people getting hit harder with the higher taxes, that's one of the few strong arguments against high taxes for tobacco -- the tax is very regressive in that it punishes poorer people. But the idea is that the higher cost will prompt more people to quit, and thereby lessen the social cost to government programs like Medicare and Medicaid.
It's pretty simple -- if you don't want to pay the tax, don't smoke.

Thats not logic to me.The logic is pretty unassailable, in my opinion. If a product is powerfully addictive and harms people to the point of death, the government has a vested interest in protecting its citizens from the product. The government doesn't want people alive to tax them; protecting the citizenry is the purpose of government itself: "life, liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness."

I just feel taxes, that pay for things such as schools and roads and so forth, need to be paid by everyone. Oregon is one of two states I think without a sales tax. Sales tax hits Everyone. That's pretty much what I mean by Logical. I probably didn't use it wisely, I'm pretty much in a fog today.
My sister is a smoker, she is on food stamps, she is obese, and has recently learned of liver problems and what not that she has. She barely gets by and still keeps on smoking. She says she is quitting. She moved has higher rent says the only way she can make it is if she quits smoking. Still hasn't quit. I don't think the higher tax will really make that much of a difference. Smokers know exactly what smoking does, it's no secret anymore.
My husband was a drinker, pot smoker, and meth user when I met him as well as cigarette smoker. I found out about the drugs and drinking shortly after meeting him and told him I wouldn't have any part of it. He quit the drugs right away, was a year later when he was done with drinking. (we tried to accept it recreationally, but he still was an ass with it) so for 9 and ten years he's been completely clean, quit on his own. Six years ago, he decided to quit smoking, did for a year, I thought it was a year and a half, but he went back and hid it for six months. he says quitting smoking is the hardest and scariest thing he's ever done or tried to do.

Those are all really interesting stories and would make for really interesting posts.
For me, logic is always two or more propositions that lead to a conclusion: if A=B and B=C, then A=C.
Or, if the government protects its citizens from harm, and tobacco harms citizens, then the government should do what it reasonably can to stop tobacco use.
Personally, I think a un-equal tax system is better. Rich people pay more, and social vices like smoking and gambling are regulated and taxed higher than other activities.

Sorry for sharing so much. I ramble sometimes.
I think rich paying more taxes than poor is logical. I also do believe that the government has a responsibility to the safety of the people. I am thrilled that it's illegal to smoke in and around all public buildings here. And I wouldn't be disappointed if cigarattes were made illegal period. But thats not about to happen. I also think that legalizing Marijuana would be very irresponsible.

Pouring whiskey in your coffee isn't forcing anyone else to drink it. I know there are smokers who are very responsible about making sure that they only smoke where no one else can breathe in the smoke, but there are enough that aren't that it has people both concerned and angry.
Cigarettes are addictive. Some people may quit. But those who don't will continue to pay anyway because there's always that segment of people who complain but still do nothing. They know this.
And yes- I, for one, would like to see a sin tax on candy, pop, junk foods and beer. The pro's for this far outweigh the cons. People live longer, you can tax 'em longer anyway.
Wow...thank you. In a matter of weeks, cigarettes went from $4.90 (on my particular brand--a more expensive brand) to $5.85. And by the end of the month...it'll be even worse. Eff.
