In my estimation you are very cynical about how Christians interpret the Holy Bible. Is that not so?
What are you doing still up? Giggle...
I do believe that it is correct, as one of the adjective's meanings is skeptical or sneering, and in your remarks concerning (not us, as you say but) how we explain what we believe, you SEEM to be sneering.

I know you are an English professor, but I do believe I know the definition of the word cynical and it does, indeed, fit into that sentence. What word would you suggest if I am so clueless then, Bob?

Still wrong. I think the Christians I disagree with are sincere, not motivated by base or selfish concerns. Its their sincerity and zeal I believe harmful. I am indeed critical of some Christians; but the correct word in context is not "cynical," which you use as a generic pejorative. Plus your original reply referenced Christians in general; I know many Christians; and only some of them do I disagree with. Over half of American Christians believe there is more than one way to eternal life or heaven or spiritual consummation or whatever you wish to call it, a statistic in which I find progress and comfort. Not too long ago I posted the poll.
Had to get up at four to take my daughter and her husband to the airport. Yawn.Poll:

p.s. I think the word you want is "sarcastic."

alright, alright

And I was calling the Christians cynical, it was you who I was saying, were...although you speak of both we and you in that regard.
But sarcastic you definitely are. And I think you are just too much of an analyst for your own good. You think everything has to make sense. But that is why the Bible says it takes the foolish of this world to confound the wise. When one has nothing of value in this world, and nowhere else to turn, it is far easier to believe in a heavenly father who can supply all of your needs, according to his riches in glory and who promises everlasting life. I feel that that is why the people in third world countries are so eager to hear and receive the gospel. They don't argue away the fact that God is offering himself freely to them; they have nothing to lose, and everything to gain; and they do.

A cynic would believe that Christians are motivated by base and selfish concerns. That's not what I believe.
The infinite mystery will always be greater than my reason can understand. I'm not bothered a bit by that; indeed I like the fact.
No interest at all in a "heavenly father." Been there, done that. Your attitude toward the "third world" is condescending.
Offer food, water, shelter, medicine, care—then god if you wish. First things first?
I'm curious, full of questions, fulfilled, content, happy, glad to be alive and able to teach and write.
Yes, I'm analytical, and I can be sarcastic. If I see folly, I call it folly, no apologies.

And third world countries are third world countries; no apologies. If I offer food, clothing, shelter, I offer God, for God is love. I cannot offer one without the other. He said that when I give water, I am giving it unto him, food the same... it goes without saying that they will see God in and through my actions.
I have been there and done that as well. Been to Africa, provided, food, clothing, shelter and God, thus bringing the way to have eternal shelter. And yes, if they do not believe in a heavenly father, they will not believe in the love we show...for this is the way they will know we are his disciples, by the love we show one to another.

There's only one world, Bonnie, and we all live in it. God is love? Hey, that God I believe in!
But beliefs?
Ick.
