There are approximately 46 million abortions worldwide each year, which is about a billion, say, in just the last twenty-five years.

By comparison, each year about 50 million people die.

About 78% of all abortions are obtained in developing countries, and 22% occur in developed countries.

Of the 46 million abortions each year, about 26 million are legal; an additional 20 million are obtained in countries where abortion is restricted or prohibited by law.

Worldwide, the lifetime average is about one abortion per woman.

Re: ABORTION
So, if we stopped abortion all together and all of those 46 million babies were born healthy, we'd have an extra billion people walking around in 25 years? Crazy. We'd have an extra 35 million just in the US....

Re: ABORTION
Actually, probably not.

The "average" is one per woman, and there are millions of women who would not have an abortion under any circumstance. Therefore, some women have more than one abortion. If they had the first child, it is possible that a good percentage of them would either take better precautions against pregnancy in the future.  Certainly, some of these women would have baby after baby, and certainly many do, but I'm guessing that the numbers would not be as high.

Re: ABORTION

For a time in the old Soviet Union, the average woman had seven abortions in her lifetime, because the government believed the pill was dangerous, the men refused to wear condoms ("they didn't feel good"), and abortion was free.

Re: ABORTION
Wow, considering that fact, I'm surprised I'm even here. My great-grandparents were russian, and my grandmother was born here sometime after 1910 (my own mother was born in 1942, so I guesstimated Grammy's birth year). Do you have any information on the time period of all this?

Sorry, uber interested in reproductive rights/issues, especially as it pertains to my family tree! I guess I could just wikipedia it all...

Re: ABORTION

The statistic was given in a book I read on Russian women about twenty-five years ago. It was in the college library here. If and when I get a moment, I'll see if it's still here. I googled but didn't ring up a title that sounded familiar.
