I've got a childhood friend I grew up with get into the military somewhat recently, as an Army Ranger. I don't know how I feel about it. You probably had plenty of people you knew get drafted or volunteer during Vietnam. I wonder how they're doing now.
My classmates were just a few years ahead of the war, and most of them went to college, which meant an automatic deferment so long as they made grades. Our senior class president, though, enlisted and was one of the very first to die in Vietnam. His body was never found. A college friend whom I've lost track of was in an artillery unit. He came back pretty much the same as before, no enduring traumas that I could discern. It was just an unpleasant job he couldn't out of. That was his attitude towards it. He was never gung ho or anything. He did say it took awhile to get used to seeing unburied corpses just lying alongside the road but eventually he did.
It seems like too many of the men in my generation, especially the ones who go into the military are so incredibly violent it's untrue.
I agree with you whole heartedly.
I agree with you whole heartedly.
I was a Marine wife for almost 10 years...and everyone of those years was abusive...and I know I was not the only military wife that was abused by her husband....there were plenty of others. And everytime one of them came back from Iraq, it got worse.
I've blogged about the abuse before, but in context with overall violence in society...but I will do it this weekend
