Jiddu Krishnamurti:

Education throughout the world has failed, it has produced mounting destruction and misery. Governments are training the young to be the efficient soldiers and technicians they need; regimentation and prejudice are being cultivated and enforced. Taking these facts into consideration, we have to inquire into the meaning of existence and the significance and purpose of our lives. We have to discover the beneficent ways of creating a new environment; for environment can make the child a brute, an unfeeling specialist, or help him to become a sensitive, intelligent human being. We have to create a world government which is radically different, which is not based on nationalism, on ideologies, on force. All this implies the understanding of our responsibility to one another in relationship; but to understand our responsibility, there must be love in our hearts, not mere learning or knowledge. The greater our love, the deeper will be its influence on society. But we are all brains and no heart; we cultivate the intellect and despise humility. If we really loved our children, we would want to save and protect them, we would not let them be sacrificed in wars.

Re: 23 KRISHNAMURTI
I've got a childhood friend I grew up with get into the military somewhat recently, as an Army Ranger. I don't know how I feel about it. You probably had plenty of people you knew get drafted or volunteer during Vietnam. I wonder how they're doing now.

Re: 23 KRISHNAMURTI
My classmates were just a few years ahead of the war, and most of them went to college, which meant an automatic deferment so long as they made grades. Our senior class president, though, enlisted and was one of the very first to die in Vietnam. His body was never found. A college friend whom I've lost track of was in an artillery unit. He came back pretty much the same as before, no enduring traumas that I could discern. It was just an unpleasant job he couldn't out of. That was his attitude towards it. He was never gung ho or anything. He did say it took awhile to get used to seeing unburied corpses just lying alongside the road but eventually he did.

Re: 23 KRISHNAMURTI
It seems like too many of the men in my generation, especially the ones who go into the military are so incredibly violent it's untrue.

I agree with you whole heartedly.

I can be so much more than a military man, and hell, I am geigh. That alone speaks in volumes lol

I haven't seen that "geigh" spelling before.

Re: 23 KRISHNAMURTI
I was a Marine wife for almost 10 years...and everyone of those years was abusive...and I know I was not the only military wife that was abused by her husband....there were plenty of others.  And everytime one of them came back from Iraq, it got worse.
