Don't they smoke hashish in hookahs? Or is it opium?

After living in the Middle East for some number of years, I thought I'd answer this. Generally, tobacco infused with fruit is smoked in a sheesha or waterpipe, resulting in a fragrant smoke. The most popular flavor is apple. In  Middle Eastern countries, as in most countries, hashish & opium are illegal, and if they are found in your possession, could result in the death penalty. Smoking a sheesha is akin to smoking a pipe, (Sherlock Holmes style pipe). It is a highly communal & sociable activity, mainly among men. (Women also smoke the sheesha, although in my experience, they used it in private, at home with family.) Although in the past, and most likely somewhere in the world in the present, hookas were used for opium smoking, that is not the case in the Middle East today. Tobacco-Sheesha smoking is a big part of the culture, and is omnipresent across the region.
