I've had to wait for almost a year to get my fix back on.  Battlestar Galactica premieres its fourth, final season tonight on SciFi Channel.  This show is, simply, one of the best shows ever made!  When the remake began with the miniseries in '03, I was one of the naysayers poo-poo-ing the show, since I was one of the original show's biggest kid fans.  I had the board game, a wallet, a T-shirt -- and the Battlestar Galactica Space Glow Putty (that I could sell on eBay for hundreds of dollars if I still had it, dammit).  How dare they try to reinvent a classic!  And horror of horrors, the character of Starbuck (Dirk Benedict), my childhood crush for two years, was recast as a chick!!

So I ignored the whole thing and went along for a couple of years blissfully unaware of what I was missing until the 2.5 season.  One day I was hanging out at my friend Lacey's and she insisted I watch an episode with her -- one that hearkened back to a classic episode about a second battlestar, Pegasus, emerging from deep space when everyone thought it was lost in the first attacks.  The head of the ship, originally played by Lloyd Bridges, was freakishly portrayed by Michelle Forbes.  I was hooked.  This wasn't just some frakkin' remake of the great, if somewhat cheesy, original.  This was a hugely intelligent, profound re-imagining of the basic premise that surpasses all the sci-fi shows before -- and really most shows.  It's not just about space fights and cool special effects, but about what we humans are and could become, about issues that we all face.  It's just that good.

Part of me is really sad that this is the final season -- broken into two sequences, I read online.  But I completely respect the creators' decision to paint their own ending and to go out on top.  To end the show on their terms, and give the fans their long-awaited payoff.  (Something that we LOST-watchers often worry about. And I will say, I enjoy BSG more than LOST because they don't frak with your head and create such complicated situations that one needs a doctorate in physics to understand what the hell is going on.)

I'm terribly disappointed in those who dole out the awards -- the Emmys, the Golden Globes, the SAGs, etc.  This show is better than anything else out there but the stigma on sci-fi shows runs deep, I guess.

So tonight it's me, the TV and some lovely treat that I will allow myself for such a special occasion.  Nobody better call or bother me.  I will be in my little bit of Heaven...

And just so you know... I AM the final Cylon.  Smiley
