I have a friend who is trying her darndest to bring her fiance over from Scotland. They are filling out all these papers and jumping through hoops engulfed in flames... The paperwork that they need to fill out is insane! It almost seems like it's not worth the effort...but it is.

I also think it's pretty important for illegal immigrants to become legalized citizens, too. Everyone should be doing their part to make sure the United States stays open and friendly to newcomers, even if they do have to fill out lots of papers. I want to urge people to do what's right and become legalized citizens. Here are a few reasons as to why it is so important:
  • You gain the right to vote and have say so in the government that rules over you.
  • You get protected from being kicked out of the country.
  • You don't have to worry about those green card renewal fees.
  • You gain the right to come back if you decide to leave and travel the world. You even get legal rights outside the USA for being a citizen here.
There are more reasons than those few. The list is virtually endless. You can even Apply for US Citizenship Online so there is really no excuse.Get your information together and apply as soon as you can. The sooner the better for you and your children!

As another british citizen trying to move to your country, but only because of friends, I find it ridiculous how much I have to do like find a job to sponsor me, prove that an American can't do the job better etc. Yet here are thousands of Mexicans invading the country with skills any American has yet no one does anything to stop them!

yes I understand your point. I think the amount of paperwork and hoops they make you jump through is ridiculous, too. I also don't believe that anyone should be able to come without doing some sort of citizenship work...maybe not so much as they are making you go through but the illegals should be made to become legal. It sucks all around right now.

I agree totally that illegals should become legal or get sent back. Here in the UK they are trying to clamp down on illegals with limited success

Re: Immigration and becoming a US citizen
it's too easy for people to fall through the cracks, so to speak they can't keep tabs on every border at all given times. it's the biggest loophole ever. then there are people like you trying to do it the right way and you are getting scrutinized like mad. unfair really. I wish you speed and blessings with getting your citizenship here. I know it's tough.

I feel for your friend and her finace.  It is a whole lot of hoopla, the paperwork and such.  Perhaps we need to take a look at how we can change the process for someone wanting to become a legal citizen in light of all our troubles with illegal immigrants.  I'm not saying open the dorr and let 'em all in hoping they are here for the right reasons, but perhaps lighten the load a bit.

At any rate, I say well said...and I voted

thanks. it would be nice to lighten the load for people so it isn't so intimidating.

Re: Immigration and becoming a US citizen
My husband and I have been living the immigration nightmare for five years.  He came from Canada, and applied for permanent residency after we married.  It took three years and close to $20K in application and legal fees to get his green card.  Every step of the way has been a nightmare...oh, the stories I could tell!...and it isn't over yet.

I understand now why people come here illegally.  It's easier.

Re: Immigration and becoming a US citizen
yes...very easy. that's why the immigration laws should really be more lenient. you can't guarantee that someone won't go through all the trouble and money to get a into the country and NOT blow it up. you just never know. all that red tape is beyond reason! How much more do you guys have to go?

Re: Immigration and becoming a US citizen
It's too soon to tell.  My husband has a green card, but no longer holds a valid passport...his expired during this process.  So he can't even go back to Canada, or anywhere outside the US.  We've got to find a way to remedy that (probably several months and several hundred dollars or more).  Then he needs to apply for citizenship this summer.
