Now that the Jena 6 Saga has died down and everyone is living happily ever after, I wanted to report on another overlooked and aggregious event that needs immediate judicial intervention:

THE WORK PLACE DRUNK!

When I was growing up, I used to hear the term "Functional Drunk" and probably never grasped the full meaning of this term.  Now that I'm a grown man and actually work to pay bills, I have come to understand this phrase's full meaning and know that it's both funny and sad.

We have a person at work who comes in early, sits at their desk, works a little, looks up stuff on the internet, takes their 2 (or sometimes more) 15 minute breaks and then leaves for lunch and later, for the day.  You know, what almost everyone who works in an office does.

The funny thing is that this person litteraly comes in daily with alcohol on their breath.  Somedays, the smell is more pungent than others.  There are times when you can smell the alcohol, the toothpaste and mouthwash all mixed together like some sort of drunk witches brew - on those days, it's hard to be around this person.  On other days, the smell is less detectable.  If I were to guess, this person shows up at work 4 out of 5 days in the more exaggerated condition.

I'm not one to take bread out of a parent's hands, especially when I know what it's like to not have a job and still need to have bills, groceries and indulgent lessons paid for.  I'm just rather curious as to why this person hasn't been fired?

I guess the bigger question is should this person be fired?

In the end, maybe the recycled adage is true, "Drunks are people too!"

lol!!!

Yeah, I know.  On the serious end though, I don't really know how to continue to feel about this type of thing.  I know that whenever I see people drinking and driving, it makes me want to be a cop again (I was a Military Policeman.  Alot of my frieds who served with me all those years ago are cops in the counties where I live).

It's perplexing.

It's sad is what it is. These are people who are hurting, visibly expressing it, and making other people pay for it. That's not cool. They have to want to help themselves. Not to be offensive but this is business and they're like a debit? and not an asset to the company.

Very true, indeed.  What most people don't really care about - and I am guilty of this at times myself, though not in the drunken monkey sense, is that we are reflections of not only the company but ourselves.

When I shave and have on a nice shirt and slacks or a suit (which I'm working on getting more of to wear to work)  I look good and I represent myself and the company in a very cosmetic, likable sense.  It may be shallow but that's what helps win clients - how you look, talk, act and dress.

You can't do that very effectively when your a walking drunk.

Bingo. Give the man a beer, oops. But that's my point- we celebrate in such a way here and some people cannot handle when the party ends and where the work begins. I think you are 100% correct in that your appearance does attract clients. I read body language a lot and posture is very important as is dress, fresh breath... well you get the idea. We're a package. And no one justs wants the paper, they want to be able to unwrap the package for the gifts within. Sad to say but the self destructive don't have much to give. Not in that manner.

Go sweep my best MD gf off her feet, be the total package! Smile...
