Can anyone tell me why we call it a "pair of pants", when it is neither a pair nor plural when referring to one?

E.g., "Do you have a pair of pants I could borrow." or "I put on my pants one leg at a time."

Re: Pants?
this caught my eye .... i always like to learn things so i did some quick research, like most of our words they evolved rather than just created. the precursor to pants were hose worn by men, they covered each leg seperately, that is where the plural form started. eventually they the hose for each leg were connected at the top and called trews (plural for the two hose that were connncected. our word pants came from pantaloons which was the Italian word for a clothing like trews but were not hose but made form material for outer wear .... so i think pants is just evolved from articles of clothes that at one time covered each individual leg and when they merged into one piece the s was added to show this was a complete pair for covering both legs ..... that was boring ... i think i should stick to blogging and posting about the things i find a more fun .... i apologize for rambling and possible answering a rhetorical question.   have fun today
