This is an open letter to the warring factions out and about in the Raleigh Road/Nashville Road area on the night of October 20-21.
Not that I expect that any of you actually have the ability to read a newspaper, but it is very annoying to try and relax in one’s home, and even dare to try and get a good night’s sleep when you are out trying to impress someone—while actually impressing no one—with the rapid firing of your little pop guns.
Perhaps if after your first session I had squeezed off a few rounds from my .44 Magnum to show you what a real gun sounds like, you would have crawled back under your rocks where you belong and remained silent the rest of the night.
It is a shame that decent people can’t enjoy a quiet evening at home, and that the police have to put their lives on the line all because of a bunch of ignorant trash and their toys.

This was not a regular “Jabberwocky” column as it did not appear under that banner in either the Daily Southerner or the East Carolinian. It is a letter I wrote to the editor of the Rocky Mount Telegram, the paper where I now live. It is, however, in the same spirit as a “Jabberwocky” column, and is included in the “Jabberwocky” archive.
