Yesterday while out in the garden checking things out I decided to take a peek at the last years artichoke plant and see if there were any baby chokes popping out.  Yes there were ...... two ..... cute little tiny baby artichokes.  The only problem was that they were covered in earwigs.

Earwigs disgust me, send shivers down my spine and overall just give me nightmares.  They are the most disgusting of disgusting creatures.  So needless to say, when I saw my little artichokes were being devoured by them I sprung into action.

Neither Dave or I will use pesticides on our fruit trees or vegetable garden.  We always will try every method under the sun naturally to eradicate the offenders before the last resort of a pesticide.  So in I came ..... googled "earwig control" and found that they can be pretty hard little bastards to get rid of.  BUT .....

One of the suggestions was beer.  Yes, beer.  Now since there is generally a beer or two around here we decided to give it a go last night.  So using the suggestion of a jar lid / petri dish and filling with beer at the base of the troubled areas we did just that.

And I anxiously awaited the results.

This morning upon checking it appears that earwigs really do like their beer.  Several hundred at the very minimum ..... died drunk and happy.  We will keep doing this every night until we see no more earwigs.  Teach them to mess with our garden!

So far this year we have managed ants with cinnamon and cayenne pepper / and now the earwigs with beer.   The beer is supposed to work with slugs too ..... but didn't capture any of those last night.   Really have not seen too many slugs ..... Dave says they are out there though.

The end.

Peace.  J.

Re: Julie's Gardening Tip #1- Earwigs
Yeah, I figured beer cause that's snail and slug control too.  Only thing is it is too damned expensive and you don't want to waste your beer.  Here's something I found for snails and slugs that might work:

instead of beer, put a container (low of course) with warm water with a little honey mixed in.  Those ugly things go into that too and drown...har de har.  Then, another trick with snails, et. al. is to roll a newspaper and make a "trap" for them.  In the early morning, when it is still cool and before they have begun to move around, pick up that trap filled with buggies and feed them to your chickens ;~)  Karma...haha

LOL ......

We had tried the rolled newspaper trick in the past and it did so so ...... but I saw where for earwigs you can use vegetable or canola oil / maple syrup / water and hopefully get the same results.  We drink very cheap beer around here ..... lol .... so a beer missing here and there won't be missed from a thirty pack ..... we will try that honey trick tonight ..... I'll let you know the results ..... Smiley

I remember as a kid my dad would pay me a penny a snail ..... then I would pour salt on the poor bastards ...... and got enjoyment out of it ..... now it kind of sickens me.  LOL

Peace.  J.

YEah, I know what you mean about throwing salt on the darned things and kinda getting sick about it.  I throw them into the middle of the street, where I know they won't make it.  But in a way, that's worse.  However, if you have any ducks, they will eat snails.  Not chickens, though the chickens will eat them after a while.

Maple syrup and water would be about the same as honey and water.  Just trying to find something cheap.  Don't waste the whole can - just give those boogers a little...LOL

Namaste

HAHAHAH... "a beer or two around here"  that totally made me giggle.

that's AWESOME that it worked!  can you imagine how it was discovered?  some guy was like, "god dammit!  i've tried everything i can to kill these fuckers!  HERE!  DROWN IN SOME BEER YOU LITTLE ASSHOLES!!!!!!!!"  and then he came back the next day and...... bam!  they did just that!

also thought your contribution to laura's wedding was VERY cool!

LOL ...... that is to flipping funny ..... I can literally picture that too ....... lmao

Yeah, they asked us if they could have some of the gold from our claim to add to the other gold that other family members have donated ..... I cried ...... it meant a lot to us both ..... and my dad, who truly adored Laura (she can no way remember him) would be honored ...... so its very special.

Wow that's good to know it works! So far we haven't had too many earwigs but the slugs are completely out of control this year... I've heard beer works for them but haven't tried it yet, I should probably do that too! Hope your artichokes turn out good!
