The Well of Lost Plots / Jasper Fforde

Thursday Next duikt onder in BookWorld, in een obscure, ongepubliceerde detectiveroman in The Well of Lost Plots. Ze hoopt zich daar te kunnen verbergen tot haar baby wordt geboren, en tot ze een idee heeft hoe ze haar "uitgewiste" man weer terug kan halen. Er blijkt echter een en ander loos in WOLP – de agenten van Jurisfiction gaan in rap tempo de pijp uit, terwijl één van de bestuursorganen een nieuw ImaginoTransference operating system – UltraWord^tm – probeert door te drukken. En ondertussen wordt Thursday belaagd door Aoris Hades, een mnemonomorph, die er bijna in slaagt haar herinneringen aan haar man, of beter gezegd, haar herinneringen aan wat dan ook, uit te wissen.

'Well,' he began, 'when we first came up with the "page" concept in BOOK v1 we thought we'd reached the zenith of story containment – compact, easy to read, and by using integrated PageNumber^tm and SpineTitle^tm technologies, we had a system of indexing far superior to anything SCROLL could offer. Over the years—'
Here he flipped the chart over to show us varying styles of books through the ages.
'—we have been refining the BOOK system. Illustrations were the first upgrade at 1.1, standardised spelling at v3.1 and vowel and irregular verb stability in v4.2. Today we use BOOK v8.3, one of the most stable and complex ImaginoTransference thechnologies ever devised – the smooth transfer of the written word into the reader's imagination has never been faster.'

Deel 1, The Eyre Affair, zal ik zeker niet lezen (Wide Sargosso Sea vond ik nog net acceptabel;  verder moet het echt niet gaan). En deel 2, Lost in a Good Book, stond niet op de plank, dus daarom maar begonnen in deel 3. Ik denk niet dat ik nog terugga naar deel 2, maar deel 4, Something Rotten, wil ik nog wel eens meenemen. Dit verhaal had in elk geval genoeg vaart, en een ingenieuze setting. De "name dropping" en de meligheid waar ik bang voor was, vielen erg mee. De setting van het verhaal is ingenieus, en de vaart blijft er goed in, op een paar kleine overbodige excursies na (rage counselling in Wuthering Heights???).
