My friend and I got into a lengthy discussion on this last night, so I'll pose the Q: to you Mindsayers n see what you come up with.

Here's the deal. Tomorrow you are going to spend an entire year on a desert island alone. All food and drink will be provided as well as a home. You can bring whatever a large suitcase can fit, BUT you can only bring 8 CD's of music (we thought 5 is too hard and 10 is too easy)...and that will be all you can listen to for the entire year on the island. To make it even more challenging, I am also adding the rule that no 'Best of' compilations are allowed either! :) Now, let the selection process begin!

Here are my choices to give you some possible ideas:

1. Sade - Lovers Rock (my all time fave singer and I feel her best record)

2. Pink Martini - Sympathique (For my lounge moods)

3. Nirvana - Never mind ( cuz I'll miss Seattle and need to rock out now n    then! )

4. Corrine Bailey Rae - Corrine Bailey Rae ( One of the few records that I love every song )

5. RUN DMC - Raising Hell (My Adidas, It's Tricky...nuff said.)

6. Saturday Night Fever - Soundtrack (I will bust a disco move if no ones watching..oh yes, I will!)

7. Beatles - Abbey Road ( I'm just too much of a fan to go w/o)

8. Portished - Dummy ( I will need this for all those cold, lonely and dark       times I'll have)

Re: Dessert Island Discs
Tough question! Oh my gosh...let me see here.

1. Tom Waits - Brawlers, Bawlers and Bastards (There's a little bit of everything on that album, after all.)

2. Tweaker - 2 AM Wake Up Call (the whole CD is based on the moods and modes that accompany insomnia...wonderful night music)

3. Repo! The Genetic Opera - Soundtrack (Was there any doubt? Great singalongability)

4. Sarah McLachlan - Touch (wonderful music for quiet, interspective times, plus one song that always makes me think of a tropical paradise)

5. Battery Cage - A Young Person's Guide to Heartbreak (a little mix of everything, but mostly dark, violent music concerning the progression of a relationship from meeting at a party to the ensuing suicide after the break up. AMAZING music to write to.)

6. Silent Hill - The Collected Soundtrack (great ambient music, for foggy nights, for writing, or just wandering around and creating a nightmarish dream scape in my mind)

7. Flogging Molly - Swagger (Irish punk. Angry? Happy? In love? All this and more!)

8. Cornbugs - Rest Home For Robots (Bill Moseley. Singing. Loud guitars. Nonsensical lyrics. How can I resist?!)

Hope you enjoyed my list. Now go download all the albums listed.

I knew, if not one other person, would reply to this. I actually was highly anticipating the eclectic Neonite mix.

Hhmmm... yep, Tom, Cornbugs, and Repo..all givens. But Tweaker (suchan appropriate name for the music) will be one I will be dowloading, and I forgot how nice a record 'Touch' is.

Great list and thanks for sharing!!

(going quickly to downloading site...typing Tweaker...now!)

Re: Dessert Island Discs
I don't remember if I've told you about Tweaker or not, but it's a one man band manned by Chris Vrenna (ex-drummer for Nine Inch Nails).

Re: Dessert Island Discs
Nope. I would have already downloaded it, per your usual trustworthy suggestions.

Re: Dessert Island Discs
its actually Desert Island. A dessert island would be made up of ice cream, cake, cookies and what not.

Re: Dessert Island Discs
Lol!! Oh, but that would be kind of a nice island to be on for year too, but I may need to re think my list. Btw, what about your top 8?

Thanks for the heads up!

Re: Desert Island Discs
Nice link! I had no knowledge of that actually. My friend and I got the idea from the little newspaper Tower Records used to have at their stores. It had a column with DID's where people would list their top 10. But, like I mentioned, I think 10 is quite easy to pick out.

Thanks again for the reply...and why not list your 8?

Ahhhh

You're welcome! hmmmm... (checks mp3 player time!) - definitely some Elvis, Dvorak 9 2 (so gentle but so powerful it makes the hairs on your neck stand on end), Delta Goodrem, Meatloaf, maybe some Abba (quite uplifitng, sometimes deep), bit of Eric Clapton maybe... (hard to think of more haha) I don't really have CD's... but those are the main ones!

Re: Desert Island Discs
I don't think I have the energy to think of eight right now, but I can see we have similar taste in music (though I would trade Abbey Road for Help!).  Have you checked out Pepe & the Bottle Blondes?  He's the male singing on "Donde Estas Yolanda".  I have "Latenight Betty" and it's a great CD.  It's much more Spanish-themed then PM, but just as engaging, in my opinion.

Also, are you familiar with Jamie Cullum?  He strikes me as someone whose music you might like.  I suggest "Twentysomething".

Just curious where you download from, if you'd be willing to share that.

Re: Desert Island Discs
I think my new catch phrase for you Toppie is 'When ya least expect her, expect her'

Help! is a fantastic choice as well. Abbey Road just has 3 of my all time fave Beatles tunes on it, so if i am to go with one record for a year...gotta go with that. Yep I listened to Pepe & The bottle blondes awhile back..liked them..but a little too repetitive. Like Buena Vista Social Club. Great to listen to for a few songs..then time for a change of style and pace.

Oh now this is funny! I actually heard his music from a friend on the east coast who helped mix his Twenty Something record. Yeah, he is great! Talented and a wide range of influences. My fave thing I read in an interview was one of his influences was Japanese cinema! What's not to love about that. I'm tied between that record n the next..um...Counting Tales? He also did a remake of Massive Attacks 'Teardrop'.

I use Bearshare. It's free, fast, and has no spyware or pop ups (Also your suggestion awhile back of Adblock Plus is a huge help!) and I can almost always find the song I want. It works with my iTunes too.

Thanks for the replies bombardment...but how 'bout listing just 2 selections you'd take for me?

Re: Desert Island Discs
OK, I can probably handle two.

1.  Foreigner - Records

I love this CD, and Jukebox Hero in particular.  I have been known to put this CD, or even just that song, on repeat for Days.

2.  Def Leppard - Hysteria

In my opinion, their best work.  I don't know what else to say about it.  I never seem to get tired of this one.
