I've been seeing posts attacking Christianity, and posts protecting Christianity, and in turn attacking non-Christian religions. So I feel it's time that I speak for a third party.

This party is called the "Why should I give a shit what religion you are?" party. This party respects your religion, what ever it is. We don't care. What we do care about is if you are a good person.

People who argue over religion act like they are arguing over the age old question: Which is better, cake or pie? Who give a shit? You might like cake, or you may like pie. But that's not enough for some people, they need to go argue over which flavor of pie or which type of cake is the best. That's right, the cake lovers start to fight cake lovers and pie lovers start to fight pie lovers. They start like these guys:

And they end up doing shit like this:

The thing is people, we are born into our religions. It is shaped by everything around us. It may change when something life-altering happens, but otherwise, it never does.

So what am I trying to say out of all this? Who cares if you believe in Moses, Jesus, Muhammad, Buddha, etc. We are all people. The only thing you are accomplishing by arguing over this stuff is going against your religion. How can I say this? Because all religions have one thing in common: don't separate because of your differences, but unite!

Re: Now, I'm Usally Not the One to Talk About Religion, but I Think I Must
Religions are not all about uniting and getting along.  Not all religions anyway.  Islam for instance shows a trend toward world domination, as does Christianity in a sense.  At one time Judaism was an evangelical religion converting pagans of various sorts.  For any religion to want to convert others plays on the pretext that it is the right way, and the others are wrong.  In that sense, religious "battles" are going to forever exist because many of us believe in absolute truths and we disagree as to what that truth is.  Some might call that trivial, but some of us think of it as essential.

I just think it's stupid for millions of people to die over something like faith. From reading the New Testament (I read it under the guidance of priests to clarify what I read), Jesus wouldn't be too happy that wars are called out in his name. Hell, any sane person would be pissed off that thousands of people are dying because of  them.

I didn't say that uniting was the main thing, just something that they all have in common, like the stuff about doing good works and treating all people with respect.

It's sad, but I must agree that people will continue to fight over religion until the end of time like a bunch of 5-year-olds. That is, unless something big happens before that.

I would agree that Jesus probably wouldn't want wars called out in his name.  I think some wars are needed however--it's a sad fact of humankind's existence---but that's political rather than religious.

Well not even all religions have that unity in common--granted many do.  But I'm glad you're not saying it's the main thing.

Well i'm a pretty vocal christian, you don't see me attacking other religions. DO I think they are wrong? absolutely..It's not a matter of cake or pie..it's a matter of right and wrong.

Of course, in the end, I'm not to worried if you believe me. I'm not going to argue what is fact. You either like me as I am or don't. If  a person wants to talk to me about my beliefs? Fine let us palaver...if  you just want to talk to me to try to belittle me? Be on your way I don't have time.

Such is life

I wasn't trying to belittle anyone. It's cool if you talk about your faith, it's just when people start bashing other people's faiths that I have a problem with.

Re: Now, I'm Usally Not the One to Talk About Religion, but I Think I Must
Question though:  what about rival faiths--such as Christianity and Islam?  Or Ancient Judaism and Ancient Paganism--one group is diametrically opposed to the other on religious and political grounds because of their respective religious ideologies.  Would these sworn enemies not feel justified in "bashing" the other group's religion/faith?

Re: Now, I'm Usally Not the One to Talk About Religion, but I Think I Must
I don't bash them..I've had a lot of pagen/muslim friends.  You never see Jesus doing such..in fact he gets on to jews more then he does any other religion in the bible.  Do I think they are wrong? yeah..but i'm not going to freak out about it.  Is it right to return hate with hate?   LIke I said I will discuss it if someone is really willing to listen, but I don't get in to long, drawn out debates where no one will change their mind.

This comes from experiance; I've been in to many of those.  Believe me I will stand up for what I believe..but i'm not going to sucked in to just arguing with someone just to argue.

I was referring to bashing the religious ideology rather than the adherents.

If the leaders tell them it's ok, then it's possible, but there are the smart people who see the pointlessness of hatred.

Re: Now, I'm Usally Not the One to Talk About Religion, but I Think I Must
But what's the hatred directed towards?  I'm not advocating hatred towards people... but hatred towards what you consider a terrible ideology I wouldn't put out of the realm of rightness.  It's a good thing to hate evil no?

evil or True evil?

Re: Now, I'm Usally Not the One to Talk About Religion, but I Think I Must
That all depends on what's True goodness.

Personally, hate is never a good thing.

Re: Now, I'm Usally Not the One to Talk About Religion, but I Think I Must
Well how would you suggest we should react to evil (assuming of course that we can identify evil and are on the side of good... this is hypothetical in a sense.  )

Re: Now, I'm Usally Not the One to Talk About Religion, but I Think I Must
We avoid it.

Re: Now, I'm Usally Not the One to Talk About Religion, but I Think I Must
But isn't that allowing it to reign over us?

I mean (again, presuming we're good) don't we have a responsibility to stop evil where it prevails?

Re: Now, I'm Usally Not the One to Talk About Religion, but I Think I Must
By avoid it, I meant avoid doing it.

Yes, we have a responsibility to stop evil where it prevails, but do we always carry it out?

Re: Now, I'm Usally Not the One to Talk About Religion, but I Think I Must
In a perfect world.  But no one is claiming this world is perfect.  My worldview is that all people are evil inherently, and any spiritual good is of God.

Re: Now, I'm Usally Not the One to Talk About Religion, but I Think I Must
Mine is that people are both good and evil, but we must eventually choose a side.
