It disappoints me to NO END that Scholastic would put out a 'vocabulary building' book about the human body designed for young students, and make this beauuuuuuutiful diagram labeling all the bones inside a human body....

... and call it 'the fibia'.

There is no such bone as the 'fibia'.  There's a Tibia, the big bone in your lower leg, and then its counterpart, the FIBULA, but the fibia is not real.  Rhymes really nicely with tibia, and would be a nice hybrid of 'tibia + fibula = fibia', but wrong is still wrong.

And there are less-educated teachers out there who didn't have  AP Bio and 3 amazing bio teachers in their career to teach them fact.  And these same people are going to go out and buy the book I just spent my money on, not make the correction, and teach class after class of students misinformation.  Why this is such a big deal to me I can't fully vocalize, but I am saddened by this.  To the point I may actually call or write Scholastic and ask them to fix this.

I'm looking at my order form, and there's a little sticker that comes and says '60 years of trust'.  Up until this point, I did; I trusted them to publish correct information.  Maybe I'll just keep buying their fiction books since who cares if fiction is published correctly...but I LOVE non-fiction books, and I want to build a giant non-fic library for my students to enjoy.    I konw the company is amazing, and maybe this is the first mistake they've ever made ever....but considering we live in an age where according to a commercial, '1 in 4 women willl misread a traditional pregnancy test'...how many 2nd graders are going to learn from their 'educated' teacher that they can fall from a height and break their skinny fibia bones?

(Is this just the epitome of my dorkdom, or am I slightly justified in being upset a non-fiction book was not proofread?)

Do they have  "Funny Bones on the chart too?

Scholastic Books is facing alot of criticism up here for kickbacks to schoolboards and bullying in the marketplace

Re: (sigh)(science lesson)
Fantastic.

I've NEVER had an issue with them before; not growing up, and not the rest of my first year teaching.  They're always reasonably priced, quick to send, really helpful on the phone;  like once I called to say 'this book is not in my box' and without question they said 'okay, we'll send it tomorrow'.

Now that my naivete is fading ...

Re: (sigh)(science lesson)
Our school has a great relationship with Scholastic and the parents love the affordability and variety of books.  It's just shoddy proofreading, that's all.

Re: (sigh)(science lesson)
I know.  I know everyone makes mistakes.

It just seemed ... you're a BOOK company.  Your editors should be top-notch, even if it is 'just little kids books'.

Re: (sigh)(science lesson)
these are some high expectations in our current economy!

Re: (sigh)(science lesson)
Really?  I think I'm saving them dinero.  'Cause what if someone else orders the book, finds my mistake, gets PISSED, demands a refund, and then has ALL their teacher friends boycott such a negligent company?

Much safer to just hire one good editor (maybe two, they're probably rich) to go, OH DANG, THAT'S NOT A BODY PART and fix these things?

(Emily does NOT know much about economics.)

lol no worries, I know what you mean =)

Can we still start our anti-soda revolution??  You'll handle the business/econ end of it, and I'll spell-and-grammar check all pamphlets/fliers/speeches??  Yes?

Re: (sigh)(science lesson)
LOL Sure! I am surprised you remembered that =)

Hey, the Soda Crusades of '03 have long been forgotten.  It's time to get them back on.

Re: (sigh)(science lesson)
I had no idea there was a crusade on soda lol -- hopefully I was a part of that unknowingly =)

Re: (sigh)(science lesson)
okay...maybe 'crusade' was a bit severe.  More like 'Emily went away to college and just stopped drinking the stuff OFFICIAL' after a few years of drinking a whole lot less than I did when I was younger.

Re: (sigh)(science lesson)
Will this be a standard textbook for schools or is it just a book that some teacher may have a copy of in her classroom?

Most schools do not use scholastic books as their main textbooks.

Re: (sigh)(science lesson)
no, they don't.  This is just for the library.

But still.

Mis-information is mis-information.

Re: (sigh)(science lesson)
True, but I'm sure if you caught it some other science teacher like myself would have caught it.  I was always catching mistakes in textbooks.  One misspelled the word amoeba.  It spelled it like ameba!

Re: (sigh)(science lesson)
my question (still) is, do I call them to tell them?  I know, it ISN'T life or death, that if someone called 911 and said, "hurry, I think he broke his fibia bone" they'd still get the medical attention they needed and the doctor would be able to figure out where the pain was emanating from (or PLEASE stop being a doctor!), but I still think they should know so they can fix it.

What kind of Science do you teach?  Bio?

Re: (sigh)(science lesson)
I think you should definitely call the publisher.

I taught 6th and 7th grade General Science which covers life science, physics, geology and very little chemistry and I also taught Biology at a private school that went from K - 12.

Re: (sigh)(science lesson)
aww, you taught the goodstuff!

If I wasn't teaching elementary school because I like all the subjects and the kids, I'd do either HS Biology or HS Social Studies.

I am not fond of elementary school.  You elementary school teachers are saints!

Re: (sigh)(science lesson)
Haha, that's how I feel about middle school teachers!

They're not cute, they're hormonal, they're easily influenced by peers/peers bad behavior ...
wow.

Happy Pi Day!

Re: (sigh)(science lesson)
Unfortunately, many teachers would never notice the error.

Re: (sigh)(science lesson)
I mean let's be honest, most PEOPLE wouldn't.  Science geeks and really pretentious people who think they know everything and spend their entire lives actively searching for mistakes to point out to people to show how superior they are.  And I'm NOT that person; if anything, I'm the one trying to find a way to make whatever someone says into fact.  I wouldn't have found that mistake at all if I hadn't decided to skim it fast to see if it would be good for one of my kids who is always asking questions about 'what's inside a bone'.
