A few random updates just because I can:

-- I'm looking for a good book (or two, or hell, three) to read.  I know SOMEONE on here is a bibliophile and can recommend something to me.

-- The parade today made me cry for 2 reasons.  First, because when I see this old men in their uniforms, I'm forced to think of how much they risked so that other people could have what was deemed a better life.  I am not a fan of war, but I'm more against the bureaucratic decisions to GO to war than I am the men and women who follow orders and fight for millions of people they've never met.  I absolutely support TROOPS.  I also cried because of the low turn-out, related to reason one.  These brave people put so much on the line, actually risked their lives for us or are doing so currently, and I'd say less than 100 people managed to give up 20 minutes of their day to come out and say "hey, thanks for doing that".

-- The odds of me being given a pink slip on June 1st are about 99.99 to .01.  Sucks.  You know the situation is dire if even TEACHERS aren't guaranteed a job next  year :(.

-- It's finally warmish up here; not what I want (I would be happy if it was 90 every day, and then December it dipped down to...67 (with some snow every few years), but it's warm, and I'm so much happier with it.

-- I took my mom to go see Star Trek today.  I do not go see movies in the theater, but I felt compelled to go out and spend money and pretend to be normal, and I never really liked Star Trek, but enjoyed the movie a lot.  More than I thought I would.  Go see it.

-- I went for a 5-mile walk yesterday, and it was absolutely awesome.  I walked to the high school for 2.22 miles, around the track twice, and then back home.  It was the first time since getting the warning on Friday morning that I haven't thought about the fact that I'm probably going to be let go.  I just put my iPod on low and worked up a good sweat (definitely never realized how steep North Street is because I've never walked up it before) and cleared my head.  Realized that if I work at camp this summer, I could EASILY leave at 7:45 and walking, get there  by 8:30 if not earlier.  I'd leave earlier than that because I'm insane, and then I'd already be sweaty to start a full day working at camp, but it's totally doable.

-- Speaking of camp ... is it really 10 months today, Sammy?  Did we really lose you 10 months ago today?  That can't be possible; that doesn't feel real.  I think about you every day; absolutely every day, if not more than once each day.  When the clock says 8:13, it reminds me of you.  When I hear Incubus or Kenny Chesney or Dierks Bentley on the radio, I close my eyes and float back to our trips on the bus.  People quote Napoleon Dynamite all around me, but none of them bring a smile to my face the way you did when you'd ask me if the chickens had large talons.
Sometimes, I think about how unfair it is that we had so little time together.  We were friends right away, and you were so welcoming of me even though I was brand new and you were working with people you grew up with.  I always admired your heart and your spirit and your smile, and I wish we'd gotten to know each other even better.  I wish I had reached out and overcome some shyness and approached you after our summer together was done.  I hate the fact that I'll never get to (at least, not on Earth).  I love that I can't shake you, though.  That I'm constantly reminded of you, that you're all  around me, and that THAT knowledge pushes me to stay connected to others.  You inspired all of these letters I've been writing, Sam.  Maybe one day I'll get brave and write you one.  But in the spirit of not letting people slip away, I'm going to go call Lisa.

Re: Life
well whenever you do, let me know. trust me, i'll totally remember that book! lol

Re: Life
Oh crap; it's about to be released as a movie!!!!  I don't want to see anything related to it so it can't bastardize what I'm going to envision.

However...won't that mean that the book will be readily available?  Silver lining?
lunchfly2415 on
Re: Life
yes the book should be ready to go at your request. but you so cannot see the movie until you reed the book!!  i have already seen the trailers for the movie and they have changed things to a degree. dont spoil the book with the movie!!  books are ALWAYS better and this one happens to be exceptionally good!! and truth be known, im kind of excited to hear what you think of it when you read it. haha
eje224 on
Re: Life
I always promise myself I'll read the book before I watch the movie, and then after I FINISH the book, I don't WANT to see the movie because I've built up the book's world in my mind, and I don't want to accept someone else's version as my own.

I DID see part of the Notebook, but I haven't read more than the first 5 pages of it yet, so it's the only exception to my rule.  I want to read it, but I also want to take your advice ...
lunchfly2415 on
Re: Life

Re: Life
The other issue is I'm currently juggling 2 books at a time.  The book I'm reading at school w/ my kids (we have a silent reading period each day, and sometimes they're behaving enough that I get to read, too; in the course of this year, I think I've gotten through 5-7 chapter books (but elementary chapter books, not grown-up ones), plus the one I'm currently about halfway through), and then a book at home.  Not that I'm really getting the stories confused, but ...

thank goodness for summer!
speaking of, Amazon just sent me an email about 'must-have beach blanket books' for this summer.  Will have to look into those, too.

Re: Life
wow your school is still in session? is your last day coming up soon?

i actually like elementary chapter books alot

my favorite is Bunnicula by Deborah Howe and James Howe.

i read it when i was young, then i read it to each my kids. no matter how old i get it always brings a good laugh. if you havent read it, i highly recommend it.

i'd like to see that list myself

eje224 on
Re: Life
I have not read Bunnicula; the class I tutored in last year had a copy, and one of my girls was reading it and liked it, but I never got to see it.

Yeah, school is still in session.  In NY, school always goes until late June.
Here in Mass, they're usually done June 10th or so.  But then we had like, 10 snow days, so the end date is June 24th for kids, June 25th for staff.  The last 4 days are half days, which is stupid (why aren't we just having 2 full days and being done? STUPID), but yeah...still 8 days or so to go.

*I deleted it because I don't read the series (new Nora Roberts and what not), but I will do some hunting and send it to you if possible.

Today I finished 'Hush' by Jacqueline Woodson and it was okay.
Before that I read 'Stargirl' by Jerry Spinelli and LOVED it.
Before that it was ... "Hope was Here" by _________ but 'twas amazing.
lunchfly2415 on
Re: Life
if you get a chance, bunnicula is a fun read.

i dont read as much a you, im sure. i was just in barnes and noble this morning and bought the notebook by nicholas sparks. i've had several people tell me i must read it. i also picked up my own copy of The National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Birds, Eastren Region. i enjoy watching birds in my yard and i kept borrowing my brothers book. since i was in barnes and noble i decided  to purchase my own copy.

as i was walking through, i told my husband that i seriously need to read more. i love books. i just feel like im always on the go and never make the time to read. thats about to change. lol

i heard stargirl was good. my daughter loved it.

eje224 on
Re: Life
I LOVED it (Stargirl).  I was 99% done with it when I heard that there's a SEQUEL (Love, Stargirl).  I wanna read it soooooooooooooo bad, but there are no copies local up here.  And right now I can only find it in hardcover online (and I don't LIKE hardcover, because they're bulky and hard to hold and oh yeah, EXPENSIVE), so I am sequel-less.

Did you start The Notebook yet?  I read the first little section, but then work stuff got in the way.  I think that will be my read on the train next Friday, though.  I am going down to NY for my birthday weekend, which is usually a 3.5 hour train ride, but the weatherforecast through next Saturday is evil rainy/thunderstorms, and you know weather like that is going to inspire at least a FEW delays.
lunchfly2415 on
Re: Life
haha actually i finished the notebook. i read it in about two reads.

it was good but left me emotionally spent! let me know what you thought of it.i dont want to say too much until i know youve read it.

eje224 on
Re: Life
Yeah.... I won't be starting it until at least Friday, so thanks for not spoiling it.

I'm actually a little apprehensive about reading it on the train, though.  It is SUCH a girlie book, so NOT my style, I'm afraid of getting judged
lunchfly2415 on
Re: Life
haha i serioulsy just had this convo with my daughter the other day!! i have a basket filled with books with titles such as- dont worry make money, and how to succeed at being yourself. - but what do i read?? hahah the notebook.
but for anyone whos read that book, its a lot more then just love. the way he sees the life of the elderly so correctly is a harsh reality. theres so much repect in that for me. dont worry about being judged. enjoy your book

Re: Life
Crapppppppppppp.

I just got sucked into watching about an hour of The Notebook.  I hate that it just happened; must read the book for REAL now, because there is something about that movie that was just next to impossible to turn off.  WhY!?!?
lunchfly2415 on
Re: Life
hahaha im sorry. i know how that can be. but you'll still enjoy the book.
eje224 on
Re: Life
I finished the book in 2 - 3 days (it helps having train rides and an internal alarm clock that gets you up HOURS before anyone you're staying with).

I have to admit; it was good, but I might like the movie more.  The book focused a lot more on them older, and I liked it... but I also REALLY enjoy the movie's portrayal of them meeting, them fighting, that whole SUPERCHEESY 'If you're a bird' nonsense.  I have to think about this. I think I prefer the movie.  Pains me to say that, but I think it's the truth.
lunchfly2415 on
Re: Life
i find that interesting because i liked the older view. i seen the fighting as drama lol. these days i feel to old for drama. either that or i have too much in my life now as it is and i like an escape. lol.
either way im glad to hear your thoughts on it and i hope you had a good trip

Re: Life
I think they're sweet when they're older ... but in the movie, they're so cute when they're getting together.  The way they're interacting, the way they flip so easily...

I dunno.  I think I'm biased because I am in need of affection in that way.

Re: Life
Agreed, My Sister's Keeper is an excellent book.

Also, have you read anything by Torey Hayden?  Considering your field you may really enjoy her (Hell, I do lots because I wa in the same field)...there are a few that come to mind Lovey, Beautiful Child, Someone Else's Kids...

I always recommend Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere to anyone and everyone who'll listen.

Still pregnant?

Re: Life
Welcome, any time!

And yep, still pregnant.  I'm sue on Monday, but something tells me this little one will be late just like my other one.  Stubborn!

Re: Life
I was 10 days late, and look how great  I turned out, and how great Maria is turning out

Re: Life
Maybe Olivia can show us how great it is to come out 1 day late!   lol
eje224 on
Re: Life
haha, I'm hoping that by now, she's popped out.

I had fun on the inside those extra 10 days, but I'm sure my mom was less than pleased in late June to still be carrying around all that extra weight.

Re: Life
No baby just yet.  She's apparently quite comfy and having a grand old time in there.  Maybe I need to stop eating ice cream and start pushing the veggies so she doesn't have it quite so good!

Re: Life
I watched the episode of Friends where Rachel was late.

Her doctor recommended baths, spicy food, and sex.  Try it out (perhaps all at the same time?)
porkchopper on
Re: Life
I remember that episode.  I'm not quite as desperate as Rachel.  Since I was pretty sure I'd be late I have had a pretty good mindset about it.  I have a doctor's appointment tomorrow afternoon and I know she's going ot give me a date to induce and I'm 99.9999% sure it'll be this week.  So, I'm guessing by the end of the week Olivia will be here!

Re: Life
I saw your blog yesterday (and commented on it)... seemed like YAAAAAAAAAAAY OLIVIA FINALLY GOT THE MEMO IT WAS TIME TO COME OUT!

Hope you're doing well!

Re: Life
Thanks so much.  Apparently she was finally ready!  I was so pleased that she decided to make her entrance on her own.  And thanks, we're home and doing well.  Tired but blissfully happy.

Re: Life
Awww yayy!!!!  How about some baby photos?

Re: Life
I'm having a hell of a time uploading them to Mindsay.  NOt sure what the problem is...
eje224 on
Re: Life
I think when Mindsay switched over/got fancy, the picture thing got a lot more complex.

I tried to upload pictures to my teaching blog from my school's art show a few weeks ago because they were so incredible, and I couldn't.  I even went so far as to create a flickr and then a something else (a snapfish, maybe?), but still... wouldn't put the images in.  ANNOYING.

The dad was WAY hotter than the one who was in the movie 90% of it; I thought they should have switched roles
