I have my trusty mp3 player and I am at work listening to Dolly Parton's bluegrass rendition of Stairway to Heaven. Now before you guffaw, I thought the same thing when I heard that she remade it. It is actually quite good. She is one of the few country artists that I really like. She is a great singer and a great actor. Just look at Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, 9 to 5, and Steel Magnolias if you want proof. Anyhow, back to the song, it is really good, she changes some of the words, but it really works. She also just released an album of all cover songs. She even redid one of my favorite Cat Stevens songs, Where Do the Children Play?, which is usually a sacrilege. I was actually surprised to have liked it, and to make it better Cat Stevens himself plays acoustic guitar on the song. Most Cat Steven's remakes have fallen flat in my opinion, like Sheryl Crow doing her vapid rendition The First Cut is the Deepest. Then a few years back I think it was Mr. Big who did a remake of Wild World...yeach. Anyhow to make a long rant short, her bluegrass updates of some famous songs are actually quite refreshing. If anyone wants to hear any just drop me a line.

Re: Dolly Parton...and covers.
I've heard this version.

I can't say I was as impressed as you are.

Although-I can't stand Led Zeppelin.

So, in that respect, she made it better.

A planet where real music is appreciated and no one likes a whiner.

Heh, and nobody wants to argue with an insufferable know-it-all. So you win.

I downloaded all the versions of "Mule Skinner Blues" I could find on iTunes, from the Jimmie Rodgers original down to some Czech bluegrass band. There's a Dolly Parton version which is cool.

I also downloaded a version if "Baby, Its cold outside" (an old song from the 40s, I think) by Rod Stewart and Dolly Parton. However the version of that song that remains most vivid in my mind is the one by Homer and Jethro and June Carter. "Have a drink, whats your hurry. Well, maybe jist a half a jug more."

I haven't heard any of those. I may just go ahead and download them now. I am curious. I always like to hear new music, the only June Carter I ever heard were the songs she sang in Walk the Line. But that was Reese Witherspoon doing the singing.

Re: Dolly Parton...and covers.
Reese Witherspoon actually sounds nothing like June Carter.  June Carter's voice is somewhat strange..not bad, necessarily, but unique. Not sweet and girly like little Reese's.

I got to check it out now. I was quite impressed with how well Reese sang in the film.

Re: Dolly Parton...and covers.
Im a huge Dolly Parton fan. I love her. Not only her music, but her as a person, shes absolutely amazing. She does a cover of "Shine" by Collective Soul which I wasnt too fond of but hey it's Dolly, i'll listen to anything she sings. My favorite is "Whyd You Come In Here Lookin Like That", its just hilarious. And I think theres this band called uh...oh crap who is it..something like...SNFU who does a pretty good cover of "Wild World" in my opinion. And since we're on songs, get a song called "Shoot Me Down" if you like good music. Its by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.

I will get it when I get home. I didn't like Shine by Dolly either.
