A bittersweet Monday holiday

I was getting excited about the Labor Day holiday until I realized, I have every Monday off. Rats! I feel like I’ve been robbed of that excited holiday spirit. Doesn’t matter which Monday holiday it is, having it off is special. For me it’s just business as usual, well… almost. Lite1x’s day off is also Monday except on this Monday he has to work. At least Matt’s off from school, and what does he want to do? Run an early morning cross country race, of course. Hmmmm. Sounds like my non-holiday day off is going to get complicated.

I was quite old before I found out what Labor Day was really about. At my house labor meant work, and work we did. That was the day my dad mowed the lawn and did various home improvement projects. I think Home Depot and Lowes must have known my dad because I noticed both had large advertising circulars stuffed in the morning newspaper this week.

But Labor Day is to celebrate the workers of America. I never could figure out why my dad didn’t consider himself a worker. Because of his job status as an engineer, he was salaried and therefore considered part of management. Now how picky is that! Anyone who holds down a job is a worker as far as I’m concerned. From the highest paid CEO to the lowly minimum wage employee, all work. All who work for the same company should think of themselves as on the same team. But these days, as it also was over 100 years ago when Labor Day first began, those in the top positions seem to think they can screw over those on the bottom. But they forget, those on the bottom are the ones who actually do the work of the company. In other words, they are the ones who produce the goods or services.

I’ve been an office worker most of my working life. In observing people in different jobs in different kinds of companies, I’ve come to a few conclusions:

1. The company receptionist should be one of the best trained people in any company. The phone receptionist should know proper telephone manners and know all about the company. This person should be well paid and treated as a vital part of the team. A receptionist who meets the public should also be trained in both manners and attire. First impressions can never be made a second time. An office temporary should never be hired as a receptionist.

2. The office staff, whose function is to make the bosses look good to the clients should also be considered part of the team and be well compensated. Since these people know a lot about the companies they work for and their clients it seems to me there would be less turn over if they were given the respect, and pay, they deserve.

3. Bosses should never breathe over any “secretary’s” neck while he/she is trying to type something for the boss. No matter how impatient the boss feels, this technique will only slow the typing process.

4. Chatty bosses also slow down an office worker’s productivity. If companies do not wish to pay overtime, they need to monitor their bosses’ behavior.

I think that will do for now. To all the workers of America, enjoy this Labor Day weekend. Stay safe. Rest. And be ready for work on Tuesday.

--------------

If anyone is keeping up with my dental saga, I broke the temporary inlay this afternoon. Now I have to wait until Tuesday to get it fixed. Sometimes Monday holidays are obnoxious!

Re: Labor Day
So true.  Having Monday off doesn't feel as "special" when you always have Mondays off.  I had that type of feeling when I was in school.  I always had Friday off, or Monday, depending on the semester, so when there was a holiday or some other closing on those days, it didn't feel that important for me.  Being an office worker myself, though it's only been for a short time, I can definitely say that the list you posted is so incredibly true.  It is an assistant's job to make the boss look good.  However, in my last job experience, it seemed almost impossible to do.

Re: Labor Day
I'll give you a hint: bosses forget they are just a member of the team. Some seem to think they're more important than the rest of their staff. Oooooh. I could tell you stories...., but I won't. All bosses are different. Some don't even have a clue what's going on. I always wanted a boss who would stay out of the office and just send in the assignments. Then I could do the work without said boss's interference. Some of my bosses were like children who wanted to "help". I couldn't refuse, but golly I could have gotten things accomplished a lot faster without their "help".  Smiley

Re: Labor Day
In my first post-college job (and only thus far) I see it......so much.  He doesn't want to know the problem.  What's the solution--that's all he cares about.  He doesn't want to "help", he wants results.  Perhaps I impressed him with my turnover time, because he's too clueless as to how to go about doing my job.  He's clueless on most aspects of "behind the office" type stuff.  He does things and makes decisions without checking with others--such as the Finance director.  Just because he wants it done a certain way, he does it whether it's even possible.  He was great at sending me more assignments, but the thing is, he wasn't organized enough to follow up with me, or even explain what he wanted.  Sometimes I'd have something done for him and he didn't even remember what he'd asked me to do.  Oy.  I felt like his wife or babysitter.  Actually I almost felt sorry for his wife because I have no clue how she'd go about keeping him in check.

Re: Labor Day
I do agree with you that having Monday's off normally does take away from Labor Day for any worker.  And then their are those that no matter what holiday it is have to work.  Medical professionals; town, county, state police, FBI, CIA, and Military personnel, mothers and fathers, and many more people.  My own husband has yet in the past 7 years truely had a Labor Day holiday off.  Why?  He is a packing plant maintanice supervisor.  If his crew is working he works.  Even if his primary crew is off, he is there because of the back side of the week crew is working.

So yes Labor Day is to celebrate anyone who holds down a job, but many US workers don't get Labor Day off!

Oh and a side note:  First impressions can never be made a second time. An office temporary should never be hired as a receptionist.

I do take a tad bit offense to the office temp should never be hired as a receptioinist!  I myself before decieding it is better to stay home with my children worked as a temporary office worker.  And did my best at ever job I was given through my agency!  Even was offered full time positions in many of my temp jobs.  They are workers also and many get looked down because they are temporary.  They fill a need when perm. office workers are out on medical, family, or vk time.  And not all of them do a bad job!

Re: Labor Day
Sorry. I think I ruffled your feathers about the temp comment. Let me explain. I've worked for several temp agencies and been hired to permanent jobs from a couple of placements. My least favorite was a very short stay at a company where they needed a temporary, you guessed it, receptionist. These male bosses left me out in the reception area all by myself to answer the phone with only a company phone list for assistance and nothing else to do. They didn't tell me who was who in the company or, in fact, any thing about the company. Each time the phone rang I felt like an idiot which in reality I was. I didn't know who was in the office, who was out of town, who did what in the company. It was several very stressful days in which I hope I did not lose them business. After that gig I asked never to be sent on any more receptionist jobs. Answering the phone properly for any company is much more important than simply saying hello and the company name.

Most of my temp experiences were good, and I was never looked down upon. That was probably because I worked my butt off at every job I had. I did have another temp experience that was interesting. The company where I was working wanted to hire me permantly. After working temp for them for several months, they said they wanted to hire me and made me complete some sort of aptitude test that consisted of taking certain sayings such as "a stitch in time saves nine" and explaining their meanings. I suppose I passed, but when they offered me the job they would not tell me what they were offering to pay me or about any benefits. They said before they would tell me those things I had to agree to work for them. At that point we parted company because I wouldn't play that game. Knowing that company they were probably planning to pay me less than what the temp agency was paying me.

Oh, and to clarify, my husband works for a company that works 365 days a year. They rotate who works holidays and Labor Day just happens to be one of his days this year. In the past he's worked Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, Memorial Day, whatever. For some jobs, it just goes with the job. Since he normally does not work on Monday, he's getting Wednesday off this week. But of course I work on Wednesday. Smiley

Re: Labor Day
Oh I totally understand that aspect!  I had something similar happen with a temp job.  Only difference is.........hehehe.....it was for an industrical fab company.......I just let them have it about their behavor and all the other stuff.  They shut up real fast told me how to do things.  And I ended up getting more respect cause I yelled at the owners just like the other workers.

But I still didn't take it.  Being the only woman in a shop of horny men.  Didn't think so!

And that sucks you have to work Wed!  Hubby and his whole crew not to mention the plant have to work today.  Stupid company said no kill so all maintance was coming in.
