I often experience déjà écrit here -- that is, I believe I've already written about something, and so I don't write it.  [And how about those accent marks, eh?]

Anyway, I had to take a long train ride, and was finally able to finish a book I've been reading a long while: The Manuscript Found in Saragossa by Jan Potocki.  Since I walk to work and have a ten-year-old at home, I don't have that much time to read, so it took forever to get through the 660 pages, but man it was worth it.

It's somewhat similar to the Arabian Nights in that one story follows another, and stories are nested in each other to the point that you forget that you're reading a story in a story in a story.  Add to that the narrative in which the whole thing is couched, and the constant interruptions... sometimes the suspense nearly made me jump from my seat and shout something.

More often, it made me laugh out loud, which is always fun on a bus or plane or train.

Some of the stories are both funny and compelling, and the character telling the story is periodically interrupted by the ongoing "real" story, and you're on the edge of your seat wondering what in the world will happen.

If you read it or have read it, I'd love to know.

I am going to look it up and give it a try.

Nice accent marks.  When my daughter first gave me this laptop it came with a Canadian Keyboard and easy access to the accents. You even used our beloved eh.

I am pleased with you.

I had no idea you spoke with an accent *s* I'll also look it us since I out of reading material. I just finished Scorpion's Gate by Richard Clarke. It was good but is too close to reality to enjoy without feeling a little hopeless.

It's hard to be well-informed and happy at the same time nowadays.

So many issues - so little attention

Just looked it up on Amazon and marked it as a future read. Sounds interesting. As someone who takes the train every day, I always need new books.

Re: Ending the summer reading
Hey, just wanted to tell you that I picked this up over Columbus Day weekend and am really enjoying it so far.  I started it Monday and am about halfway through...I usually burn through books, but this one is definitely taking more time. I'm actually enjoying having to take the time to get through this...I have been leisurely reading it on the commuter rail and while I'm annoyed when I get to my destination and have to stop reading, the sudden interruptions from real life kind of go with the flow of the story anyway. Thanks again for the recommendation. I think I'll have to check out the movie based on this too, which I've heard is pretty trippy.

Re: Ending the summer reading
I'm glad -- hey, there is a big surprise at the end of the book.  I had read a little about it, and expected it to just cut off, but everything gets tied up in the end, if you can believe it.

Oh, sounds intriguing...I read a few other reviews before buying it and it seems like people either love or really despise the ending...can't wait to see what it is!
