After only three games, Akron-Fairgrove Schools has decided to cancel the remainder of their varsity football season. A-F, a school of only 126 students, could only field a varsity team of twenty players, a small roster that became smaller after injuries.

Because of the lack of depth, the so-called "Viking Nation" had been easily conquered in their only three games, losing 57-0 to AuGres-Sims, 53-0 to Dryden and 45-8 to Owendale-Gagetown. You know the season is going to be a long one when you're annihilated by the likes of Dryden and perrenial bottom-feeder Owen-Gage.

This is the second time in 11 years that A-F has dropped varsity football. In 1994, the school dropped football for a season when they had the same problems. I feel sorry for the seniors on the Vikings squad. Only three games into the season, and that's it. But, as A-F's athletic director said, it was probably the best decision since they were risking the players safety. Most of them probably would have been playing all three sides of the ball (defense, offense and special teams) all game. In a nine-game season, they could burn out easily.

My alma mater, Kingston, was supposed to play the Vikings in Homecoming 2K5. That has been rescheduled for October 7th against Carsonville-Port Sanilac. C-PS is fielding a strong team again this year, so nothing like going from the worst to one of the best for Homecoming, right?
