Another news item this morning about one of the women of disputed age from the polygamist camp giving birth.... her child taken into state custody.  Why?  What is the point here?  Were these children being abused to the point where a child would be taken from its mother upon birth while the issue is resolved?  This woman carried the baby for nine months- is she a criminal by virtue of her age and residence?  I am confused.

Happy Mother's Day, eh?

Re: State custody?
I think a lot of people are, and a lot more hear five seconds of a news story in passing on television and now believe there was a house full of old men gang raping 5 years olds.  So far I have heard no evidence that there was any sexual misconduct, but then evidence doesn't matter, it matters that most people think it's a house full of child rapists which is why the government can take away their babies.

Re: State custody?
It seems that they are justifying it by saying she is a minor... or so they think, although she reportedly claims to be 22... but minors are having babies everyday and not having them taken away..... I just don't understand why there isn't an uproar... is it because this is a religious sect with beliefs we don't understand or don't agree with?  Does that make their way of life criminal?  Are we willing to see rights taken away because we don't want to get involved?  Has "homeland security" made us less cognizant of what rights we have?

Just feel like there must be something I am missing here or there would be more people upset, but maybe I'm wrong.

I think you hit the nail on the head when you asked if it was because it was a religious sect with beliefs we don't agree with.  I believe the vast majority of people when they talk about freedom of religion actually mean freedom of THEIR religion.

It's very simple, and it's been going on as long as civilization.  The government promises security in exchange for liberty, and invariably uses the power to subjugate their own people and those of other nations.  As long as people think they're being protected, they don't care about their rights because they assume it's necessary for their own safety.

You're one of the few people who has a sane view of this issue, most made up their minds immediately and with absolutely no evidence, and will almost certainly never change their minds whether or not there's evidence to the contrary in the future.

I would really like to see a list of the crimes these people are being charged with and the evidence being used to hold them in custody while the situation is investigated.  The whole situation is so bizarre

In the same light, evidently, we initially allowed the Hawaiian natives to die in large numbers from totally curable diseases because we were offended by them running around half naked and having multiple wives.  Reportedly the Catholic church finally saw an opportunity to recruit new members by sending medicine and saving them .... convincing them that this loving god now wanted them to adhere to a revised moral standard

..... how Christian of us!

Re: State custody?
I honestly don't think that we're at a point in this country where you need evidence or an actual crime to round people up.  You just need media control, which we have, and an ignorant public, which we also have.  When you say any group of people, whether you call them terrorists or not, don't have the same rights as everyone else, you just open the door to take those same rights away from everyone else.

That sounds both very christian and very American so I wouldn't doubt it.  We started the nation out with genocide and we're basically founded by the religious fundamentalist rejects of a military empire, is it any wonder we ended up where we did?

It wouldn't be surprising given our history if we were the ones who provided the totally curable diseases.
