Lord God, please bring rain to Georgia and to southern California.

Father, forgive us for turning away from You.  We have pursued almost everything else imaginable but You.  Please have mercy on us and bring the rain.

Who is the "us" you speak for, Jim? That's a bit presumptuous of you, isn't it? Or do you see yourself as another prophet in the line of prophets?

I include all those who are willing to admit they have fallen short of what God requires.  If this does not include you, I beg your pardon.

No, I don't share your self-abasement. Bertrand Russell: "[This] whole conception of God is a conception quite unworthy of free men [and women]. When you hear people in church debasing themselves and saying that they are miserable sinners, and the rest of it, it seems contemptible and not worthy of self-respecting human beings." —And even those who may feel as you say, is it not presumptuous to assume you speak for them or that they would want you to do so? Have they asked you to speak to God in such a way on their behalf? Or do you simply arrogate to yourself that right?

Re: Just A Very Bad Drought Keeps Georgia On My Mind
To say that one has fallen short of what God requires is not self-abasement.  It is the result of thoughtful introspection into one's life and the truth and a proper understanding of who we are who God is.
As for your wondering whether I'm a prophet or not, your time would be better spent praying for those whose lives have been uprooted and for rain.

Now you're praising yourself for "thoughtful introspection" and "proper understanding." Pray for humility.

Re: Just A Very Bad Drought Keeps Georgia On My Mind
Let's try this one thing that God requires: Love your neighbor as yourself.  How are you doing with that one?  If you say you are doing that, you have done well--you are doing one thing that God requires.  If you haven't--and almost no one does--you have fallen short of what God requires. This kind of thinking is hardly self-abasement, no matter what Bertrand Russell says.  This is thoughtful introspection and realistic evaluation, and you have just done it. If you agree that loving one's neighbor as yourself is a meritorious way to live, then you have also had a proper understanding of something that God requires.  Hardly a matter for boasting.

Re: Just A Very Bad Drought Keeps Georgia On My Mind

"Almost no one does," you say, yet in your entire life you have known well only the tiniest fraction of human beings who have lived and do live. You no nothing of their love or lack of it. You're simply reciting dogma. The truth is you do not know. Almost everything you write is not truth but merely belief, though you insist otherwise. In addition, you continually praise yourself for your knowledge of god and truth, though you understandably object to my calling it boasting. How earnestly you desire to be humble! But then with almost every word you speak like a pope. So long as you continue to do so, you will have difficulty in your life. As for Russell, he embraced the golden rule and came closer to living it than any Christian I know. Pray for humility. I'll let you know if it's having any effect. Smiley

Please tell me how you have done loving your neighbor as yourself.
