What follows below is another one of the troubling things Jesus said.  It’s troubling because it seems to contradict the other clear teaching, not only by Himself, but by His followers, that the only way to know God the Father and eternal life is through Him, and that is by a believing on Jesus, giving one’s life to Him, by faith.  This scripture seems to indicate that we can have eternal life by doing religious acts.  If this were true, Christianity would be like all other religions, which attempt to reach or please God or get to heaven on the basis of acts that have been performed in this life on earth.  Christianity is the only religion that throws that notion to the ground.  There is nothing one can do to make one holy enough to know God and enter heaven.  There is only One who was and is holy enough, and we receive Jesus’ righteousness when we receive Him.  Our own righteousness is worthless.

“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne.  Before him will be gathered all the nations and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.  And he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left.  Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.  For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’  Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink?  And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you?  And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’

“Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.  For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’  Then they also will answer, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to you?’ Then he will answer them, saying, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.’ And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

Does Jesus mean that we can know God and go to heaven by doing these acts of kindness?  That doesn’t make a lot of sense, again, in the light of His teaching and that of His followers.  It also doesn’t make a lot of sense because one could be the worst kind of individual—a murderer, a rapist, a child molester—you name it—and still have helped those in need and thereby enter His kingdom.

No.  These acts that Jesus lists are the objective evidences of individuals whose lives have been transformed by His Spirit and who love Him.  Jesus always works from the inside out.  We do the things we need to do because our lives have been transformed.  We don’t do things so we can be “Christians.”

But this in no way diminishes how troubling this scripture is for Jesus’ followers.  Because we must ask ourselves, “Are these evidences in my life?  And, if they’re not, do I truly know Him?”

For many of us, the bar of a life of devotion with Jesus is much higher than we thought it was.

You really have to go through some contortions to twist the clear, plain common sense of this passage into the peculiar belief system you promote. Nice try but no cigar.

Just out of curiousity, where DO you stand on the subject of God and Jesus?

Re: Giving Jesus A Drink--Of Water
No teaching of Jesus is clearer than this one. Jesus divides us into two groups, those who help the needy and those who don't. Those who without exception help the needy go to heaven; those who don't go to hell.

Nothing could be simpler.

So is it Jesus who has been unclear? Or this blogger who ties himself in knots to interpret text that a child can understand?

Re: Giving Jesus A Drink--Of Water
If we take scriptures as individual statements, the Bible becomes nonsense: a combination of contradictory sayings, some of which are passed off as "wise."  To interpret this passage as you propose, Jesus would have to deny the very purpose for which He said He came to earth--to lay His life down for the sins of the world.  Read His statements and those of His followers as a whole piece, not as isolated statements without context.  This is why there are religious wackos who have taken scriptures out of context and use them to justify all kinds of bizarre beliefs and behaviors.

Though I admire your generosity and commitment to the needy, I consider you one of those wackos.

Re: Giving Jesus A Drink--Of Water
I don't think either one of you are wackos, in fact I think even using such words to describe someone does nothing to further....well....anything. Do I believe there are strange and skewed views and "religions" out there? Sure I do. Do I think sometimes they may be a little nuts? Yes, of course.

But here's the point, and this is proven and continues to be proved through the fallible mind of man: NO ONE can understand the mind or mysteries of God. Some take the scriptures literally and thrive in their relationship with God, some don't. Some take the scriptures figuratively and thrive in their relationship with God, some don't. I believe God speaks to us as individuals through His word, not as a whole unit. This is why there are so many religions, endless discussions, arguments, and splits between people who believe in and worship the same God, yet are divided by the smallest difference in opinion over interpretation of scripture. I don't think this is what God had in mind for the togetherness of believers.

I don't have a problem with healthy discussions about God and the scriptures, because I believe this is also healthy. But when the discussions lead to calling names, trashing another's views, and being downright disrespectful, then God is nowhere in sight. This was not His intention.

Just my humble opinion.

But what about us wackos?

Re: Giving Jesus A Drink--Of Water
While going through the very begining of this thing with mr howard I fed him and checked on him while he was depressed, even though the rest of the house could care less about his well being I didn't want blood on my hands. I look back now and know he took that as a sign of weekness, along with other things I did for him but I am ok with it. I know in my heart I at least tried and would want someone to do that for me be it deserving or not at least try/

GREAT POST!

Wow.  You're an amazing woman.  Hats off to you. And I know what you did was pleasing to Him, as well, regardless of how Mr. Howard responded.

Re: Giving Jesus A Drink--Of Water
Stop. I am only as good as my TEACHERS. I don't know if you remember being a newbie but its like everything else in life, the more I hear explained and taught to me this easier it is to do what I know is right. As far as Mr Howard he is still in an angry place and this battle is not mine, its his and Gods.

I say thank you a great deal to you, but you already know those are simple words that can't express what you have given me. You are the one thats amazing I think if I got into a constant match about my belief I  might retreat but you don't. I respect you for that and say thank you We never kow who we are saying "no ,yes, what do you need, you are loved, be blessed) we never know what those simple words might achieve and or prevent. Thank you for giving me all of these. I needed the most when I pretended everything was ok!

Be blessed

Re: Giving Jesus A Drink--Of Water
I'll be glad to give you a cigar my brother, this entry not only makes perfect sense to me, but in a strange kind of way it "takes the pressure off" so to speak, to know we can't just "perpetuate kind acts" to get into heaven. Since I've come to know Christ again and so real this time, these things He talks about doing are things I WANT TO DO! I don't feel like I HAVE to, but from within there is a longing to reach out in any situation wherein God could use and be of help.

Great post my brotha! Strength and Honor!

Exactly.  He does that good work in us so that, as you say, we will want to help others.  It all comes from Him, through Him--and for Him.

Strength and honor.

Re: Giving Jesus A Drink--Of Water
We do not have to do any certain thing to be good enough to enter into Eternal life, but, as you have said, when we have been transformed by the renewing of our minds, we just wish to do these things. God puts compassion, love, longsuffering and all of the fruit of the Spirit in us when his holy spirit comes to live within.  And if they are not all there from the start, they are instilled within us as we draw closer to Christ and his nature becomes our nature.

The word says that we will be known by the fruit we bear, whether it be good or bad fruit, or nonexistent.  The works of the flesh are prevalent in an unclean life, just as the fruit of the spirit are in clean lives.  Also, if we are fulfilling the great commission, we will come to Christs bearing our sheaves with us.

And yes; you are so right when you say that we should be searching our hearts daily if we are not showing these fruit and if we are not witnessing.  These two things, and our showing love one to another, will be the motivating factor in whether or not we are ready for eternal life in heaven.
