I received this email a couple of days ago.  I was especially moved by Mr. Rubesh’s final request.

“The attached photos just came in this morning.  They are pictures of the Talahena Calvary Church in Colombo that was attacked by a mob of Buddhist monks and supporters just last Sunday.  Pastor Roshan (shown in one photo) is the younger brother of the pastor of our little church in Kandy.  He and his father were hospitalized in the attack.  The attack came while morning worship service was in progress, and the photos tell the rest of the story.  Please do keep these dear people in your prayers.  There is normally very little legal recourse available through the police as the government is hesitant to challenge Buddhist clergy who are involved in these things.  Pray that through such times (and numbers of churches in Sri Lanka are experiencing this sort of thing), God’s people will demonstrate the gracious aroma of Christ in the midst of suffering for His sake.

Thanks in advance for your prayers.

Ted Rubesh”

Re: Attack On The Church
Buddhist monks attacked a church?  I'm not a proponent of course of Buddhism, but it seems odd to hear of them attacking anything.

I know what you mean.  It's been a surprise to me, too.  But it's happening.

I'm with Sandi...

Buddhists attacking anything is really hard to wrap your mind around.

Re: Attack On The Church
Buddhism is the main religion in some Southeast Asian countries, so bad things done by people would also be bad things done by Buddhists -- of course, in every society, people do bad things. Similar to people attacking abortion clinics have been done by "Christians," or even that a common criminal in the US would call himself a Christian and be devout.

Religious conflicts are always based on complex issues apart from theological difference, like class, race, economic disparities, personal vendettas. South India has had mass violence between Muslims and Hindus.

Re: Attack On The Church
True enough.

I'm not above violence, no way, I think there's a time and place for it, when social circumstances demand it, but I admit that that's a place where my religiosity is weaker and my humanity is stronger.  I'd have a hard time reconciling violence with Christian or Buddhists beliefs, but I could justify it with myself, if it were necessary.  That's where the hard part is for me reaching around this particular event.

OH yes, that the spirits of your children will continue to send up the right aroma and spread even to the persecutors, O Lord.  Bless that dear church and give them strength to stand strong and start again.  If they were not your church, they would not be attacked; obviously, Lord, something is going well.  But you are stronger than any evil force and you will overcome, no matter what...
