I hear you on that one. I'm not one to mess around and try new stuff with my hair, but a couple of months ago I went through some crazy stuff and the worst day of it all happened to be the day I had an appt, for my haircut. I asked my stylist if she had time for highlights and stuff, luckily she didn't, who knows what I would have ended up with, lol.
Some of these changes occur naturally, while others get a little help from hair stylists and the barber. The term 'Barber' comes from the Latin word barba meaning beard. It may surprise you to know that the earliest records of barbers show that they were the foremost men of their tribe. They were the medicine men and the priests. But primitive man was very superstitious and the early tribes believed that both good and bad spirits, which entered the body through the hairs on the head, inhabited every individual.
The bad spirits could only be driven out of the individual by cutting the hair, thus various fashions of hair cutting were practiced by different tribes and making the barber the most important man in the community. In fact, the barbers in these tribal days arranged all marriages and baptized all children. They were the chief figures in the religious ceremonies. During these ceremonies, the hair was allowed to hang loosely over the shoulders so that the evil spirits could come out. After the dancing, the long hair was cut in the prevailing fashion by the barbers and combed back tightly so that the evil spirits could not enter the person, nor the good spirits get out."
"Teenage years go to coloring hair, experiment with the latest fades, long hair for girls, perms, extensions, hair moose, and other products that help create a desired effect. Next to body weight and eye color, hair says the most about someone's appearance. People notice your hair."
"Many woman keep the same style most of their lives, wile others change style and color with mood and events in their lives. Keep your hair style and color youthful."
"If you are like most people you have to create the illusion of how you see yourself by finding your hair color and styling your hair every day."
"The manner in which people care for their hair varies greatly. Some people just wash their hair and let it dry naturally, others spend hours blow drying and styling it. We all seem to find a style that is 'us' and keep it until something in our lives changes - and we change our hair style along with it."
"In the ancient Minoan civilization the women wore their hair long with elaborately fashioned locks. This is probably because the women advertised their marital status with their locks. During the classical period women wore their hair long except when they were in mourning during which they cut their hair short. Slaves wore short hair."
"
Unmarried girls would wear their hair long and loose, or they might confine their hair with a circlet or kransen, especially on formal occasions. At times they may have worn their hair in braids instead.
Married women usually wore their hair gathered up into a knot at the back of the head, or coiled atop their head in some arrangement and often covered their hair with a cap, veil (hustrulinet) or headdress.""One extremely important function of hair styling, especially in traditional preindustrial societies, is to indicate status. Primitive men, for example, fastened bones, feathers, and other objects in their hair to impress the lowly and frighten the enemy with their rank and prowess. Noble rank among the ancient Gauls was indicated by long hair, which Caesar made them cut off as a sign of sub mission when he conquered them."
" Hair arrangement could also proclaim age and marital status. Boys in ancient Greece cut their hair, and Hindu boys shaved their heads when they reached adolescence. In medieval Europe maidens wore uncovered flowing hair, while matrons bound theirs under veils. As a sign of mourning the ancient Egyptians, whose heads were usually shaven, grew ~ong hair, and long haired Hindu widows cut off their hair."
We have the tendency in our lives to represent change with our Hairstyles. We cut it to suit a change in mood or style it for different occasions in our lives. Think of your prom or wedding as an example. Yesterday, I attended a Traditional Celtic Handfasting. In honor of which, I styled my hair with small braids and a braided chignon. I also dressed the part. I think that women throughout the ages, have used their hair to express their moods, and major events in their lives. When we go through a change, be it physical or emotional, OFTEN the first response is to restyle our hair. It is the outward reflection of the change that has occurred. The way of expressing our happiness, sadness, grief, joy, or maturity to everyone around us.
So it is not so surprising that you are changing your hair...lol....sorry for the massive reply!

lol.. it is pretty fascinating though, how hairstyles have evolved so much. I think the really elaborate curls, braids, styles of the old periods were really beautiful compared to the simple styles of the modern age, even with all our nifty new hair products we have at our disposal. I guess women had more time back then to devote to their hair and beauty was a bigger priority than say ..occupation.
this makes me want to take better care of my hair. thanks!
But before than the Celts and many of the other early tribes braided their hair symbolically also.
Certain braids were used only in battle, some were a style traditional for handfastings, and so on...
I also think that in the times of the Celts, Braids were actually a convenience. out of the way and simpler. They didn't have all the accessories we did. They would tie it back with pieces of leather, and they had tortiseshell combs, and bone combs, as well as hair sticks.... but no clippies, or pony holders, or curling irons or blow dryers...hehe...
hard work
