I share your enthusiasm for playing the latest Nintendo system. The latest GI had an excellent article on Red Steel which hopefully will be a release title. It sounds quite cool, not to mention a fun way to master the new controller.
That said, comparing "Wii" to "Revolution", I wish they would have just kept the code name. Their explanation for the choice makes sense and is well thought out, but in my opinion, a good name for a system should need no explanation. Maybe that's just the writer in me. Hearing the code name "Revolution" still makes me think of the inovations they plan to make with the new system and controller. Hearing "Wii", the first thing that leaps to mind is a French speaker saying "Yes."
Ah well...no press is bad press. Frankly, I doubt many people will keep from buying the system just because they dislike the name, and even if hardcore gamers choose to make fun of it, that will still serve as word of mouth about the system.

You sir, speak the truth! I agree with you a 100%. It is true that even if someone makes fun of the game, someone will think about Wii and wonder what it is. A potential buyer.
I found their explanation all well and good, but your right when it should just make sense. Revolution worked, it was a revolution in that no one has done this before. Great name that did capture the feel of the system. Wii already has too many uses that it just doesn't feel right... although, I still believe we are going to see some "Apple" and "Volkswagon" type advertising. If advertised correctly, Wii could become more of a lifestyle name then a product name. I have already seen that with the GB Micro. It looks "Apple"-like packaged. Wii could set that type of image.
*crosses fingers*

That's also a good point I had not thought of! The name will lend itself to some "revolutionary" ad tactics using minimalism to grab attention. One could run a 30 second add on TV with nothing but a solid black background with bold white lettering which reads "Wii" and then "wii.com" in smaller lettering below. No explanation. Maybe music (though silence would probably get even more attention for 30 seconds). And that's it. 30 maddening seconds of silence with three letters and a tiny URL which leads you to the details. Yeah. It could work.
Further, the images of the system are quite sleek, so the "Apple-style" packaging would be quite appropriate, IMO.
It'll be fun to track this story. Could this question possibly be coming up on an egocentric MH in the near future?

They keep claiming that they are not going against Microsoft and Sony in the "console war". They are their own separate entity. Choosing the name "Wii" just shows this further.
And it won't matter. As long as it has a controller and it hooks up to your TV to play games, the public perception will be that they are the same thing as Xbox and PS. It won't matter how they market it.

I think I was more commenting on the fact that when I say I'm going to play 8 hours straight on my Wii... it sounds like I'm a chronic masturbater.
What a stupid friggin' name.
Oh well. Like you said, the name won't matter a whole lot. I myself won't buy one right away because I'm just not interested in it yet. Later on when/if my GameCube dies and/or there's a number of good titles on the whatever-it-is, then I might save up and get one. Until then, I'm content with my GameCube and my brother's PS2.
LOL! I appreciate that.
I think I'm having some trouble keeping a schedule going.
It feels good to know that people care.. Thanks.
