how funny...I was going to blog about this exact same topic today...
since they changed the top blog format - it's gone to hell. People vote for their friends blogs, they vote for pimpmunk's blog - regardless of what it actually says...and I actually think that since the forums have gone up - people don't really care as much about the actually blogs...
I'm sure there are a lot of folks who would agree with that. I know you spend a lot more time in the forums, now. I don't, myself, but mainly that's because I spend less time on MindSay in general.
Once upon a time, Top Blogs was a good way to find interesting blogs that you'd want to regularly read. Not lately, though.
God thank you, I noticed when I first came back that not only was every blog he wrote being nominated, but that he had 4 up simultaneously, and they were posting on top blogs within five minutes of him posting them. Personally I think he logs in under another name and does it himself, which I told him, which prompted him to leave for a couple of days. It wouldn't bother me if he ever said shit, but he just says whatever the most people will agree with while offending no one. Plus I'm just fairly certain he's completely full of shit.
Partially it's our fault, I try to find good blogs and nominate them, and since the aforementioned time I have noticed that there usually at least a handful of blogs that are actually good. If we think the choices suck we just need to nominate the ones that don't.

I didn't really think anybody noticed this. Pretty much a majority of his "opinions" deals with writing views that people in general would agree with. I've yet to see any type of entry where it takes a view or stance that anyone would think wrong of him. Though, that's pretty much the reason why I like to write about some subjects, to see what disagreements will come out of it even if my views aren't popular. I think o.O Hmm...if that's not the case then I should write something like that one of these times.

Whether he does it deliberately or just writes that way unconsciously because he wants to be liked it gets very irritating. I don't need to see another top blog on why people shouldn't run over babies, or why serial killers aren't nice. It's not nearly as irritating however as fifteen fucking blogs about someones ungodly seed.
Regardless of whether you do it deliberately or not, if no one disagrees with you, you just didn't fucking say anything.

That's very true. I've always been fairly stingy with my votes, giving it a sort of false economy of supply. I have unlimited votes, but if I parcel them out for only the truly great ones, it'll be more meaningful. But you're right... I need to nominate even ones I find "good," never mind "great," if only to help bump off all the mediocrity.
i was told that you can not vote using a different screen name because of the computers IP address- or something like that. He would have to go to four different computers using four different screen names to do that. I hardly doubt thats what he is doing.
top blogs isn't no where near what is should be. Pimpmunk is a good person- its sad that just because his blogs get nominated that he is disliked because of it.

Well, I should test that but I never feel like taking the time to create an account. I think that's plausible, but I also know that couples will often both have blogs, and they must be using the same computer sometimes at least, so can they just not vote for each other's blogs?
In any case, with pimpmunk, besides the number of blogs which are indirectly about me, it's not that he gets nominated, it's that pretty much anything he writes, no matter how trivial is immediately nominated. It's clear he has some teenage girl with a crush or something who religiously votes for anything he writes. Today it's not even about pimpmunk entirely since someone felt the need to hijack 75% of the top blogs for two babies most of us could give a shit about.
Whether he is a good person or not is not the point, there are plenty of people out there writing more revealing, intelligent, funny, and relevant blogs who don't get nominated at all, and I think people should spend more time finding those than just renominating what they feel comfortable with. On top of that, people will repeatedly vote for the same dumb shit. Fine, someone voted for pimpmunks blog and he can't help it, but that was the best blog in the last 24 hours by a margin of almost twice the one below it? Give me a break.

What? Thought-provoking posts? On Top Blogs? *laughs uproariously* That's a good one. I've been here 2 going on three years and I've yet to see Top Blogs made up by those types of posts. Maybe one or two but it still always seems more like a popularity thing than an actual "Wow, people need to read this."
not really. It's been like that since they changed Top Blogs. But there used to be quality posts there. It was a good way to find blog entries that were actually worth reading...
Well, I still remember when the format was so that the Top Blogs of the day were left up for one whole day before another set rolled around. And it was a popularity contest then too since I remember people complaining about the lack of quality blogs.
well, no matter what you change it to - people are going to complain. All I am saying is - the fact that it takes 1 vote to be put on the top blogs page definitely brings the quality level down. Yes, there were stupid entries nominated, there's no avoiding that - but there were MORE quality posts.
If there had been more quality posts at that time, you wouldn't have seen people complaining so much about the lack of it when the system before this one was in place. Then people would say "yeah, that's true but what can you do? The people who do get voted up there (the "popular" ones) have a larger base than the ones who actually write something good." And after this, you will soon see some posts about people complaining about the quality and blah, blah, blah. It starts the same cycle over again in which people will say they'll vote more or not, continue to ignore it or not, and eventually it'll go back to as it was with stupid posts getting voted up until next time when there's an implosion of stupid posts getting put up.
I was just saying what had happened before and what will happen again. People will get upset that others are complaining that their blogs aren't "quality" and that why should anybody care, it's not like Top Blogs is such a high honor anyways and blah, blah, blah. I look at Top Blogs pretty much every day, I do it mostly to see what others vote and I've seen these types of entries before and the subsequent entries that will follow. I'm not saying anything that hasn't happened before already...
Yeah but I'm already thinking ahead to when people just say "who cares." It anything that was said today actually does make a change, I'd be surprised. It'd be a break from the stupid cycle.
yes, it would be a nice break. i seriously doubt anything said today will change anything...but that doesn't mean that it can't be said anyway.
I think part of the "problem" is that, let's face it, MindSay is a very small community, making the impact of cliques all the more pronounced.
The double edged sword... On one hand, it's got all the niceties of a small town, and on the other, it's like high school all over again...
when i first got on this site, it used to be based on the number of comments. that led to some interesting, not necessarily quality, posts being up there. i don't think it was called "top blogs" back then. at least you were likely to see something that was worth commenting on, something that wasn't the general opinion.
maybe it should be somehow a combination of the two?

If you've read my writing, & found it to be boring or redundant, I can't tell you how sorry I am. My goal has always been to get people who have suffered to talk about it, & let me help them any way I can, & I get on the list nearly daily. I'm hoping I'm not one of the redundant blogs you spoke of. Take care, QuellyQ
No, you're fine, the issue is with the same trivial thing being in umpteen top blogs in one day. I've found many of your entries fairly informative.
