Today was a shopping/exploration day. No more orientation so we were free to do whatever we wanted, which made a nice change. Me and a couple of other people met up with Nichole, who has become like my mentor. I never really understood the purpose of mentors until now. Nichole studied on the same program as I'm on, only about 4 years ago, and while she was over here she met a Brummie and eventually married him and now she's living and working in Birmingham and on her way to becomming a British Citizen - which is my ultimate goal. So I feel like we have a lot in common and there are so many things that I want to ask her and that she can teach me.

Dan still doesn't know that I'm over here yet, and it's nice to have someone I can ask all my questions to and ring up if I need something. So anyway, she took us on a tour of the city centre today showed us where the markets are, the cheap shopping places, the good pubs and clubs. I learned a lot. Some people even applied for jobs and got interviews but I'm not sure where I want to work yet so I haven't applied anywhere yet. I'm a little indimidated by the pub/club/bar scene and I'm not sure if the high street stores are for me or not yet, so I'm going to think about it for a day or so. I have to apply soon though, because on Monday the British students will supposedly stop partying long enough to apply for a job and then they'll all be taken so I need to steal one away first.

I got some stuff for the flat and some instant tea for me - I didn't even know they made that, it just dissolves into cold or hot water and tastes amazing! I got this Malibu and Pinneapple kind and later I'm going out to buy some Malibu rum to put in it cuz that would definitely improve it!

Tonight I'm going out on a bar/pub crawl for new students thats sponsored by the University. They take us down all the cool pubs and clubs on Bristol Road, which is right by where I live and outside of the city centre.

My flatmate Steph and I went down Bristol Road last night and had dinner at this chinese/indian/thai place  - the curry was amazing!

On our way back to the flat we got introduced to these four british guys and one british girl, and we went back to their flat for a few hours. They were super nice! All the English people that I've met here have been SO friendly and even excited to learn that we're Americans. They want to ask us a bunch of questions and they want to teach us all they can about being British; it's extremely easy to meet people here.

Their flat was all pretty and decorated because they got to move in using cars like normal people. We talked and had drinks - they had a shit load of alcohol in their place, but unlike the Americans, they drink it casually, not all at once to get drunk really fast (although they do get drunk practically every night).

They showed me how to use the gas stove, how to use a radiator, what number to call to get the light in my room fixed (which does not work!), and then they showed me some mixed drinks that they like to do.
They have this super cheap "juice" drink here called Squash - its kinda look kool-aide, its a liquid you buy in large jars and then mix with four parts water to make the "juice". It's super cheap and lasts forever. What they do with it is mix a little squash (minus the water) with half a pint lager and half a pint cider (hard cider that is) - they say it takes the taste away and you can drink loads of it that way.

They also had some kind of vodka/lemonade/squash mixture that sounded complicated to make but that looked good.

We watched Anchorman and they all thought that was the most hilarious movie ever - one of the guys knew practically all the words!

I need to get ready to go pubbing and clubbing in a little bit, but I just got back from teaching the Brits how to play beer pong! They've never heard of it over here, so a bunch of the people from my study abroad group all went out and bought ping pong balls and plastic cups and then dragged their kitchen tables out into the center of our housing facility - which is shaped like a square with the center open. A bunch of British people came out of their flats to see what was going on immedietely -- free beer -- and they kicked our ass at most of the matches! It was so sad! Beginners luck I guess. Everyone was looking out their flat windows to see what was going on, it was a fun time!
