Great post, and charmingly written.
I have only been "the only ... in a room" once, and it had nothing to do with my faith or culture, but just my chromosomes. I felt lost, occasionally, but also hopelessly stuck on myself. It always comes back to my ego. lol
I can follow your path as you wrote this and smiled in every paragraph. Brilliant.

Are your blogging day really over? If so, I shall miss them very much but hope you are enjoying your last days abroad and your peregrinations with your Dad. Hugs, hugs, hugs. Granny
rugelah is a Jewish cookie, filled with fruit or chocolate or nuts. It's quite good, if you get a chance see if you can find some.
It's interesting. I grew up Jewish in a relatively Jewish area. I went to a University with a large Jewish population and then worked at Hillel at a couple of different campuses around the country.
My two years working with Jewish students at the University of North Carolina were fascinating. I had always taken my being Jewish for granted -- and I was meeting students who grew up as the only Jewish person in their high schools or the only Jewish families in their towns. To them, it was something much more special than I had ever had. And they helped me embrace it that much more.
Sounds like you've had a wonderful time...

I understand how it is to go from being one of many to the only. It doesn't really bother me, but it does cause me to reflect on certain aspects of my identity more than I normally would. People don't really "reflect" on their identities here, they seem to be much more reserved about sharing who they are. I see far less "pride" stickers here--whether it's black pride, gay pride or Irish pride, Brits don't appear to be interested in celebrating their identities. Which is interesting, I can't tell if I like it better or worse.
thanks for writing,

You are so beautiful...I follow your words no matter where they take me, and always feel as if I have just discovered someone very rare and wonderful!! You are so interesting...I know that sounds bland, but really, how often does one call another person interesting to their face or in this case, your blog.
You are an amazing woman!! What a delight to read what you write!!!
