Okay. Lets just get this out of the way. Michael jackson. There.

No, I'm just kidding.

So, a lot of people are very angry at the outcome of that trial.

I can see why.

But here's the thing. I've spend many long summers sitting behind receptionist desks in many different law offices.

This is what it boils down to. You cannot convict anyone who you cannot prove "beyond a reasonable doubt" is guilty.

I know many people out there are thinking "well, he's guilty as sin" and I agree. But a a society, we have spent hundreds, even thousands of years doling out punishment to the innocent.

The legal system in north america is based around protecting the innocent (for the most part).

I would rather see ten guilty people go free that one innocent person be incarcerated. Maybe a day will come when you are in the wrong place at the wrong time. Without the system we have today, there would be so many more wrongful convictions. Would you not want to have the luxury of being acquitted based on the lack of evidence, opposed to being convicted due to piles of circumstantial evidence just because you were there?

Many people are now asking, what about the ten people who were set free? Well I have to admit, the system isn't perfect, and it cannot keep you safe from everyone. There are murderers and rapists roaming the streets right now looking for their next victim. And a lot of them have never been through the system.

I realize there are many people in prison right now who did not commit the crime they were convicted of. But over the years, that number is dwindling. And I don't know about all of you out there, but I would never want my rights infringed on just because everyone "thinks" I'm guilty.

Those who are truly guilty will pay for their crimes eventually. The law may be imperfect, but karma isn't.

Very true!  But you say that ten guilty people is better than one innocent person.  It sounds like you don't know what it feels like to have a crime committed against you.  because some of them are horrible.  And you're supporting the fact that they're out there on the street.   I think if someone you cared about was wronged you'd change your position. I'm not going to ever be convicted of a crime, because theres no way I'd be at the wrong place at the wrong time.  Maybe if i tripped on a dead body, and fell with my hand on the nearby knife handle, but that's not going to happen.  I think most innocents that get convicted are probably doing something they're not supposed to be doing anyway, associating with bad people, etc.

However, even though I think the system fucking sucks, I don't think it works even when guilty people get put in prison anyway.  What a fabulous idea.  In order to rehabilitate criminals, we put them in a pool of other criminals, so they may teach each other all the tricks.  Brilliant.  Who thought that one up anyway?

In other news, this is the first point I've ever disagreed with you on. Had to happen someday.

Yeah!  I am appalled at the fact that you hear nothing about this in the news at all.  I mean, really, who in their right mind would let their kid stay unsupervised (or not) at MJ's house?  There's been enough in the news about his habits for years that no mother in her right mind should let her child associate with him in any way.

Yes, MJ did something wrong, but didn't mom (and/or dad) too?  We're all so quick to pounce on MJ, and rightfully so.  But, as usual, people just wanna pass the buck and make someone else responsible.  God forbid that the parents take a little responsibility for the welfare of their kid!

Why isn't the DA looking into child neglect, or endangering the welfare charges on the parents for putting their kid in that situation to begin with??

I totally agree.  Convicting people based purely on circumstance would make us no better than Communist China.  While I tend to believe Michael Jackson may have been guilty, I would still have aquitted him were I on the jury.  There simply was not enough evidence to remove the reasonable doubt from my mind.

ever hear the saying:

"A conservative is a liberal who's been arrested, and a conservative is a liberal who's been mugged..."

the ones who really lose in all this are the kids...

and the greatest imperfections in the law currently are where it intersects with class and race.
