When I first started writing this blog, I pointed out the cold sad fact that the most amount of people write the least read type of books: fiction.

Well, according to a recent article in The New York Times, even less people are reading fiction these days, or at least buying fiction, and that the major publishing houses are relying more and more on the big blockbuster authors, instead of taking risks on first-timers like myself.

So the impossible odds have gotten even more…impossibler.  How lovely.

But, I’m not allowed to be disheartened.  You know why?

Because my birthday was yesterday, and one of the gifts my wife got me was a subscription to The Writer magazine, with the tagline "advice and inspiration for today's writer," and articles like “Five Ways to Make Your Query Stand Out" and "A Step-by-Step Approach to Creating Emotionally Rich Characters."

She said it’s to keep me inspired, to push me to keep writing.

So, I guess I better get started…

Happy Slightly Belated.
You would think that in this economy, people would want a little escapism via fiction books to stay home and read .

Ah yes, but there in lies the beauty of libraries.  Escape into great fiction without having to pay the ridiculous prices they charge for books these days!

Re: Chapter 68: The Writer
You know what?  I wish libraries worked more like Netflix.  Often I check several books out of a library and don't start them right away.  I need to wait for my " moment".  But when your moment hits you, youhave to return across town to re - check out the book.  I like the whole Netflix principle, where you can keep it as long as you want.  Ah, well.  You do have a point.  I'm too cheap to buy books myself.  Usually.

There is a Netflix for books!  Oh I wish I could remember what it was called. I'll find out for you.

  1. BookCrossing. Book exchange. Leave a book somewhere in public, then post it’s location at the site. Make it sort of a treasure hunt.
  2. BookMooch. They do the book swap a bit differently. You ship it out to the person who requests it, and they pay postage.
  3. Freebies.About. List of magazine subscription offers, including some for anime and Windows computer games.
  4. PaperBackSwap. Book exchange.
  5. Project Gutenberg. Free classic copyright-free/expired texts in digital format, with some mobile e-formats.
  6. Title Trader. Book exchange.
Sorry, I caught this in the recent comments one day, and then I stumbled on this just now. Better than netflix because it is free!
