I want to take a few minutes to share a few thoughts here if  I might.  I'm asking myself   if  America  is ready  for  its first female  President  or its  first  ever Black  President ?  Hillary  is not  the first woman  to ever  run for the office, she has yet to be nominated.  Neither is Obama  the  first  Black to run as we all know.  Jessee  Jackson did it  some years ago.

I want to step  back   in  time   as  I  often  do  here  and reflect  on  two people.

Who was the world's first woman to run for US president?

Victoria Claflin Woodhull was the first woman to be nominated and campaign for the U.S. presidency in 1872. She was nominated by the Women's National Equal Rights Party; however, many people called it the free love ticket.

Not only was she the first woman to run for the presidency, but her and her sister, Tennessee, were the first female stockbrokers in 1870. During the time of her campaign for president she devoted an entire issue of Woodhull & Claflin's Weekly (November 2, 1872) to a rumored affair between Elizabeth Tilton and Reverend Henry Ward Beecher. With this issue, Victoria and Tennessee were both arrested by U.S. Federal Marshals for sending obscene material through the mail. The arrest prevented Victoria from being present during the 1872 presidential electtion.

What does this show me or us ?  Women have been after that office for one hundres and thirty six years and have to yet to get there. Is America ready for Hillary now in the this 22 centry ?

Now here's something else important about Victoria Woodhull she choose a Black Man to run as her Vice President, a former slave and an  American abolitonist. Who was this great Black Man, none other then Fredrick Douglass.

In 1872, Douglass became the first African American to receive a nomination for Vice President of the United States, having been nominated to be Victoria Woodhull's running mate on the Equal Rights Party ticket without his knowledge. During the campaign, he neither campaigned for the ticket nor even acknowledged that he had been nominated. Douglass spoke at many schools around the country in the Reconstruction era, including Bates College in Lewiston, Maine in 1873.

Douglas didn't become the Vice President of the United States then, what makes you think Obama will now ? Is America ready for such a Black elequent leader who's both young and smart ?

Just something to think about while we're in such an uproar about females for President and Blacks becomming a first. Lets see how it all shakes out.

What do you think ?

Re: President Black or White ?
i think there's a change coming; i haven't seen so many people excited about a presidential election in years.  i'm 45/almost 46, so that should tell you something.

i think obama represents a kennedyesque type of idealism that people are finding attractive because we're all sick and tired of the ivy-leagued/secret handshake/good ol' boy network that appears to be working for itself, not the people that elected them.  you get the feeling that he's going to honestly try to make things better.  hillary, otoh, comes with waaay too much baggage:  her own ambition, her husband, scandals involving shady financial deals and her own elitist lack of grace.    i also think she's two-faced and quick to say what people want to hear rather than what she herself thinks.  also, she had 8 years during her husband's tenure in office to help with healthcare and was unable to accomplish much.  it always pissed me off that, rather than go back to arkansas and attempt to become a senator for that state, she went after new york.  that was calculated.  and that sort of calculation makes me uneasy.

every president who has been sworn into office has made mistakes.   some presidents have to deal with the mistakes that came before them (clinton's base closure, effectively kneecapping our military; nafta, outsourcing, opening up to china).  bush had several opportunities to do some very good things and he blew them.  9/11.  katrina.  if we had not gone to war but had used all that money to work on our country's security (including immigration), infrastructure and rebuilding new orleans can you imagine where we'd be now?.....i also take exception to his abuse of power and bending of laws and the constitution.   and back to the war, but not about the war....our returning soldiers.....the va hospital situation is a disgrace to this country.   and just for giggles, having gone over mccain's voting record where the war/vets are concerned, he seems hellbent on making everyone else pay for his long years as a pow.  he voted *against* money for the va.  he voted against giving soldiers a specific time of recuperation between tours of duty.    i find that unforgiveable, since he was once a military man himself.    oh, and nobody seems to be paying attention to china.

fighting terrorism on home soil is one thing.  fighting it in a foreign land is another; damn near impossible.  what mythical creature is it (medusa or a gorgon) that when you lop off it's head, more appear?  that seems to be the truth with terrorists.  these people do not play by any rules and their abuse of women and children is disgusting.

so um...now that i've totally gotten off track...because obama *isn't* mired in years of political cronyism, two-facedness and favors, perhaps we can hope that some of these issues, which are important to the american PEOPLE will be addressed.

*steps down off soapbox*.....um, wait.  i think we've been ready for a woman or a black man for a while now.  unfortunately our choices have been supremely limited.  jesse jackson is the rev. jesse jackson, and i have issues with a reverend who wears a rolex and designer clothes (where does this money come from and isn't anyone else seeing a comparison to jim baker???), infuses himself into any situation for pr.  i also find it ironic that a man who has had a child out of wedlock that he didn't acknowledge for years would be the pastor of choice to a president who can't keep to his marital vows.

ok, i'm really finished now.

Re: President Black or White ?
To tell you the truth as a woman, I really dont' think the US is ready for Hiliary.  Not because she is a woman  but because she already was in the white house.  If the right woman should run now, I think they would have a good chance on being elected.

As for Mr. Obama, I actually do think we are ready for him.  Not because he is Black, but because he signifies a massive change in the white house.  A lot of folks do not even consider him Black but White.  I say he represents the American public very well simply because he has dealt with and handled both races.  And to be quite honest America is one big genetic combo and he represents that.

And mr blkdymun, do you mind awfully if I print your post off in full and take to my children's teachers today?  I had no clue that Fredrick Douglas ran for Vic President under Ms Woodhull!  That was a very nice history lesson and one that I think my kids' and their classmates would like!

Niassa my dear,

If this information will be helpful to your kids as far as education is concerned, by all means print it and post it wherever you wish. My thing is to educate people.

I love it. I love you and thanks a lot. Its people like you who make my taking time to research such information worth the efford. Perhaps some teachers don't know these things. We can all learn something

Re: President Black or White ?
Tyies!  I am printing it now!  Both my kids' classes (2nd and 3rd) are doing various things this month for American History Month.  Yesterday, my boy took in my kids book on MLKjr and my girl took in my book on Malcom X.  Yesterday afternoon, my son brought home his first report assingment because he is so far ahead of everyone in his class.  He had to research and then write a report on the White House.  My girl asked me to help her for next week on Women in politics!  This was perfect!

Thank you again!

Re: President Black or White ?
As an independent and Obama supporter since 4/21/07(the date I wrote the first check to his campaign), I've felt, despite my differences with him on some issues, that he has the primary quality essential to being a successful President, the ability to build and maintain diverse coalitions and persuade. That is a President's main job. I think he, among the current crop of candidates, has that in addition to the candlepower and grasp of issues. When we have the availability of this quality of candidate available, we should(and usually do) take it. I like that he has run a comprehensive campaign that had the broadness to repel the hacky attacks of former President Clinton. I feel, even as someone who falls farther to the right than Obama personally, that he would give a fairer and more respectful consideration to opposing views than any of our recent Presidents have. What I get from him is the sense that I matter in his concept, despite my differences on those few issues.

I certanly appreciate your response to my blog, I find it insparational and uplifting. I hope I was able to spark some interest with the mention of Frederick Douglas as being nominated for Vice President just after the slavery period.

Once again thanks for the response. Keep comming back.

Re: President Black or White ?
I think they both, as they're republican counterparts for the most part have failed to address the issue of the American empire, that they both along with bush have spouted the same false rhetoric on Iran, and that regardless of what they are saying now, the war in Iraq will continue, for their own protection of course, and a confrontation with Iran will still be very likely regardless of which wins.

In addition, neither will address the fundamental flaws of our fiat currency system, while Obama at least voted against the war, he still voted for funding, and that they both talk of health care and I'm equally certain for both that their interest lies not with the health of the American people, but with protecting corporations from the cost of healthcare by requiring everyone to buy healthcare, somewhat like liability insurance, though again, Obama's plan sounds slightly less horrible.

That being said, I think Barrack is probably just slightly better than Hillary, but mostly he's just a better speaker.  Neither will be able to address the real problems that are chipping away at our Democracy, and neither will stop our worldwide aggression, whether it is military coups, direct invasions, or economic take overs through the world bank, and at the end of the day we'll still be a fascist nation on it's way to becoming a completely closed society.

Re: President Black or White ?
I think the only thing the American people want is to continue not having to take responsibility. They pick whatever candidate feels good. Whether its Hillary or Obama, I think the Old Money that runs this country won't let them do much of anything beyond whatever it takes to pacify the masses- and that ain't much.

Re: President Black or White ?
You could be very right I don't doubt it at this point an time. However personaly I don't think Obama will be President, mainly because he's a muslim and he is a Junior Senator with little or no experience,  then again Hillary has none either. We shall see what we shall see. God help us if we don't get it right, there aint no goin back and exchanging it for four years maybe eight.
