Well, I finally stayed up until New Year's night before last.  First time I stayed up for the actual moment since 2000 I think.  Home alone, of course.  Well, the kids were in bed so I had to be here.  But home alone by all other accounts.

My New Year's Day went pretty well.  Since I was up early I went to church.  Heard an interesting reflection about what it meant to have a name attached to the Divine, and not only some appellation like "Adonai."  Then I came home and cooked lunch for myself and the crew.  I cooked black-eyed peas (for luck) and brussels sprouts (as a substitute for cabbage -- for wealth -- if I don't get rich this year, I'll know why).  I wonder if these same traditions/superstitions are used in other places in the world for New Year's.

I fired up the grill to cook some chicken and some brats.  But it was so windy here yesterday that I had to relight the grill three times.  I got the food about half cooked, but finished it up in the oven.  If the chicken wasn't dead when I put it on the grill, it got gassed real good, so it was a goner when I finally brought those babies inside.

Nothing spectacular, as you can see.  But maybe life should hold the unspectacular from time to time -- or even most of the time.  That way you notice when the wondrous occurs.

Re: Another day not at the office
Hi there. I have never heard of that New Years superstition tradition.  It is quite interesting.  Just wanted to make a comment on that.  Keep your head up.  I'm sure the future holds something genuine for you and your family.  Smiley

I grew up with the black-eyed pea tradition for luck.  It may be a southern thing.  My family is from Texas (5 generations) via South Carolina (who knows how many generations).

It must be.  I have never heard of that either.  Maybe my family is against superstitions.  I guess because my family is very religious.  My mom thinks superstition is evil. Go figure. lol.

Well, my family might be considered religious in some circles, too.  But none of us really believe eating black-eyed peas really brings luck, of course.  It is just something we do, just tradition.  Obviously, if superstitions really worked, the Cowboys would win the SuperBowl every year.  Smiley

haha. Very true.  I'm sure everyone here in Detroit threw out there superstitions long ago.  The Lions SUCK!
