I'm really sorry to hear about all of this. Try to keep Shadow going as best as he can. If you're going to SF, I think seeing him will make him feel a lot better. It is said that a person reverts to a child-like manner as they get older, and should be treated as such. I love your cat he is so cute though he bit me twice but that was brians fault for not teling me he doesnt like his feet touched. sorry about this though it makes me sad. though i have not connected to him like u have so i dont know how u feel. well i hope you take this alright and shadow lives longer then they think.
