Cool movie, but yeah, you should watch it a couple of times. But I put that in the same category as Memento and City of Lost Children as weird movies that you don't have to completely understand in order to enjoy them.
yeah i heard that you have to watch it twice to really get it. i was sitting there the entire time and i was like, hey i get this, this isn't hard why would i have to watch it twice?
until the very end. like when he dies and then that girl comes by with the plane thing in his room and just...
what the hell happened there?

I'll have to watch it again, which is good, because I can always use an excuse to watch it one more time. But I think he was supposed to die in the first place when the garbage crashed through his roof, and he didn't, so everything else bad happened... because he chose to get killed, both people who died in the other version of his life survived.
I think.
Or it could have been like the story "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge." If you haven't read that for school yet, you probably will, eventually. That's where I first read it, and I've taught it as well. It's a great story, too.
If you watch Donnie Darko, and Memento, and Pulp Fiction all in a row, you'll never have a problem with lateral thinking again. Linear thinking (like deciding what '2+2' equals without worrying about the symbolism of '2') may become difficult, though.

like deciding what 2+2 equals without worrying about the symbolism of 2? what the hell does that mean?
and i've heard of An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge but i havn't read it yet. i also havn't heard of anybody else at my school reading it.

It just means that after watching/ reading a lot of stuff with symbolism, or an irregular plot structure, sometimes I have to stop myself and remember that sometimes (actually, most of the time) things mean what they're supposed to mean. Kind of a joke, but something I find myself doing a lot, as a writer. It's why in between reading thick, meaningful (and enjoyable) works of literature, or after I finish a piece, I always read a straightforward mystery novel in order to reset my brain. Otherwise, I would totally over-analyze even the simplest works of art.
And I always thought side-ponytails were kind of strange, but I knew one girl who could wear one well.

ookay. i guess i get that. o.O
and the side ponytails part? haha. it's part of the song i mentioned. it goes: Donnie Darko makes no sense. (and then some other chick comes in) when did side ponytails get cool again?
and then it goes on. it's a really good song. Hipster Girl by MCLARS.
