I don't put vids from my camera to my laptop to a CD/DVD very often, but when I do, one repeated problem I have is that it apparently gets formatted in a way that only a PC can read. I find I can't play the finished CD in a television/DVD player.

Because I don't do it often, I can't recall from one attempt to another what, if anything, I did different. Can anyone give a simple solution for me like making certain a particular format is used? These are .mpg movie files.

Re: CD/DVD Burning Advice Anyone?
1. What burning program are you using?
2. What kind of disc are you putting the videos onto....a cd or a dvd?
3. When you put the disc into a tv/dvd player, do you get an error message at all or does it just do nothing?  And can the tv/dvd player play other discs without problem?

I'm not sure what kind of formatting option is available, like if there is a box you're supposed to check or something....I'm quite sure my brother would know though.  He's been helping me with my own problems - my computer's disc drive can burn cd's but not read them.  I can't play any sort of disc in my computer.  None, nada, zilch.  So I need to get a new drive.  *sigh*  So, if no one else can help, I can ask my brother if he has any thoughts.

Re: CD/DVD Burning Advice Anyone?
- burned it with the windows program on my computer and tried both settings including "master" which says it should be compatible with "most" cd/dvd players.
- it is a dvdR (maxell) which formatted and finished normally
- get the "disc error no playback feature on this disc" on the screen after a long minute of the player reading the disc. Player is fine with everything from CDs, to DVDs, to home made DVD formatted also by windows moviemaker.

right now Barryk is going to film the videos playing on her computer and then transfer that to a DVD! I can only find conversion programs on-line including one from realplayer which apparently will do cds as part of their freeware, but you have to upgrade for $40 to get their dvd burning/conversion software.

Re: CD/DVD Burning Advice Anyone?
I use a program called Nero StartSmart.  I have no idea if it was something downloaded online, my brother put it on my computer.  It seems pretty user friendly - it has separate options if you want to burn a data disc, a music disc, and you basically choose whether you're burning a cd or dvd.  I haven't had any problems, at least recently.  When I did, all I had to do was change the writing speed, so it wasn't a problem with the program, really.  I don't really know much about conversion - I've never tried to put anything I've burned into a dvd player, but I know that before my grandma got her computer she could put photo discs into her player, that she got from my uncle, and it worked fine, so I don't know if all burning programs have conversion software or not?

You're lucky to have such a wonderful sister that will help you out with this!  I could try to figure out the program files for the burning program I use and email them to you, if it's not too big to email at least.  Let me know if it's something you want to try.
