The sun is shining in southern NH and I've just returned from moving the car back to the apartment parking lot after the street sweepers made their yearly pass. Freshly buffed pavement -- can there be a surer sign of spring? Ok, there's also the low nightly hum signalling the awakening of the mini-golf course next door...

For weeks I've been looking forward to tricking out our little balcony. Since we live literally in the shadow (or glow, depending on one's perspective) of Wal-Mart, it made sense to stock up at the W-M garden center. I've bought gerber daises, azaleas and a Thai hot pepper plant and transplanted some herbs from inside into this very nifty planter (forgive the sickly appearance of the herbs):

I'm also excitedly awaiting the arrival of this "storage cocktail table" we ordered from Target:

To complete the look we need to find a couple of comfortable chairs and an outdoor rug. I'm envisioning something along these lines for the rug:

With a string of pink star Ikea lights, a couple of hanging lanterns and our (hopefully) abundant plant life, it will be a perfectly cozy summer space. My excitement over this little project comes down to this: when it's sunny outside and I'm indoors, I feel like a caged animal. Trying to suck it up and exist indoors can make for a long, miserable summer. In order to spend as much time outside as possible, a welcoming place to go is a necessity -- hence, the "balcony project." Since I work from home, writing, I intend to slather on some sunscreen and adopt the balcony as my summer "office."

I realize that I've been MIA from the Mindsay world for, oh, nine months -- so maybe an update is in order! Here's a brief recap of life since last August:

- moved to New Hampshire from Canada
- got married
- started new business

Amazing how few words it takes to sum up some major changes! A year from now the list might read like this:

- turned 30
- bought house
- made baby

Those six words encompass too much change for the ol' brain circuits to handle at once -- for now maybe I'll just stick with getting through tomorrow. ;)

Hey, how was the wedding? And congratulations on starting a new business! How exciting...what kind of business is it?

Re: spring sprung and a table to prove it
YOU ARE PREGNANT?!?!?! DID I KNOW THIS?!?!?!?!!??!

Congrats!

Re: spring sprung and a table to prove it
Sorry for the confusion, poohgirl -- ack! No, I'm not pregnant at the moment -- but could foresee it happening sometime soonish!

Egseah, the wedding was great -- fantastic weather and a relief to make it official after having to postpone due to immigration slowness! We were married outside in mid-October, which was a gamble weather-wise, but everything worked out perfectly.

My new business is a custom poem writing service -- basically, I take details that customers provide and transform them into poems that can be used as gifts, wedding toasts, text for invitations, etc. The website is www.shortorderverse.com if you'd like to check it out!

I hope things are going well with you -- nice to be back and see your familiar avatar again!

Glad to hear the weather held out for your wedding! And what a fun idea for a business...I checked out the website and the sample poetry is hilarious. I'll be sure to refer you if I hear of anyone looking for something like this.

Cool, thanks! I am relying heavily on word of mouth at this point, so greatly appreciate any benevolent buzz!

How weird is this - I'm just a random person who watches you on Mindsay because your writing is really entertaining. So I checked out your website, figuring that it would be as entertaining as the blogs, and I was not disappointed. But I just had to comment and say that by some strange serendipitous twist, I am currently attending Acadia University. I had no idea you were from Yarmouth. How random is this?

Re: spring sprung and a table to prove it
That's crazy!! You're from "out west," aren't you? What are you taking at Acadia? That's where my husband and I met -- he grew up in NH but crossed the border for school (his dad's from Halifax so he's a dual US-Can citizen). Are you living on campus? I lived in Sem first year, then in Tully for the next three.

What a cool coincidence!

Re: spring sprung and a table to prove it
Oh, you're welcome! I am from "out west", Winnipeg to be exact! I'm presently heading into my third year out there (time flies!) and yes I did live on campus my first two years, but it will probably sound strange to you that I am a girl, and I lived in Chipman - not sure what years you were there, but they switched Chipman to co-ed at the 2004/05 year - I suppose the residence life head honchos thought putting girls in there would get rid of the nasty traditions and high damage bills - they were wrong! Alas though, two of my friends and I have elected to move off campus to a cute little place on Main St. next year, so that should be very nice. I'm taking a psyc degree; I'm not sure why I chose Acadia of all places, but it is a funny coincidence you went there.

Re: spring sprung and a table to prove it
Oh, I didn't realize that Chipman had gone co-ed! I graduated in 2000. I get back to Wolfville occasionally -- my sister-in-law and brother-in-law actually live and work/study there, and were married at the chapel last fall -- and a lot has changed even in 8 years, especially in terms of residences -- Tully has been renovated, Eaton House was split into two residences, if I remember right, etc., etc. Lots of good memories from the Acadia days!

Re: spring sprung and a table to prove it
PS -- I don't know if meal hall has improved since I was there, but I'll never forget the Froot Loop muffins that appeared at the end of semester one year -- it was pretty obvious that they were scraping the bottom of the barrel!

Re: spring sprung and a table to prove it
Yep, there's a lot of changes. Eaton was split, and they built a new residence to finish off the quad - Roy Jodrey House, or fondly known as Rojo. Negative on the meal hall improvement -- Rice Krispie-esque squares, except made of Froot Loops, Frosted Flakes, Cheerios, other leftover cereals, etc. are quite commonplace! Thank goodness I'm off campus next year. I won't miss the crappy food and outrageous prices!
