The things you learn! Here are a couple of tidbits spotted this week in a local freebie paper:

- During my lifespan (nearly 28 years), the percentage of overweight Canadian adolescents has more than doubled, while the obesity rate has tripled. I knew it was bad, but the stats say it all!
- Talk about making your point: in Nova Scotia this past Monday, during the federal election, a man ran into a polling station, grabbed a ballot box and ran over it with his truck several times to ensure its complete destruction before fleeing (police suspect he may be the same man who threw a ballot box into a nearby river in 2000).

Speaking of elections, this week's saw Canada go all America with a Conservative victory. A British researcher also cited January 23rd as the most depressing day of 2006. Coincidence?

Whaddaya know...I also read recently that even the French are battling obesity! French women DO get fat, after all! I read about the ballot box guy the other day too...hilarious to think that he might be a repeat offender of ballot box abuse!

Hope all's been well...I was wondering where you'd been! Just thought of you the other day, while popping into a Tim Horton's the other day for coffee.

Ha, there is justice in the universe! Things are going well here -- I've just been terribly neglectful of all things Mindsay. Glad you're keeping the Tim's spirit alive down yonder!

Isn't that man nuts?! I read that on cbc.ca the day of the election. He had some nerve/courage to do that. I wonder what the police did to him.

The obesity rate is overwhelming. Cross your fingers that somehow, someday a solution will occur. I do understand that times have changed and perhaps we do not do nearly the physical activity that others did 'back in the day' ie. farming, physical labor etc. However, there is no excuse for over-eating and laziness. We need to do something about it !!!! When I see shows like "the biggest loser", it makes me wake up and realize how severe this problem really is. It takes a T.V. show to motivate people! The results are amazing but is there another solution? Like less junk food, more exercise so on. I saw a report on CNN a few months ago about how childrens heart problems are on the rise. The average kid eats out 4 times a week and the choice of food are McDonalds, Wendy's, Burger King...What has happened to home cooked meals? Are families "too busy" now to make a family dinner? Take a weekend, prep a lot of food and freeze it so your kids can heat it up when it is dinner time. gah! I could go on forever about this. HOpefully something is done about it ASAP.

Good points on all counts! I especially like the batch-cooking concept. I've seen suggestions for making it into an event, where friends get together to make a bunch of different dishes once a month, then divvy them up to take home and freeze.

Glad you'll be instilling the health and fitness gospel in Baby H. Keep up the good work down there in the Heartland!

Re: ripped from the headlines:

That is a real good idea. Getting friends together and making different foods could be a fun time. That is such a smart idea.

Thanks. Chris and I were those children who ate home made meals and played outside 'til it was to dark to see anymore. I hope our child picks up some of that. Playing outside and exercising with friends without knowing it was a blast! What has happened to our children?!?!?

Re: ripped from the headlines
I meant to ask in that rant. Do you know children who eat out that much? I am not sure who they poll but I do not know a single kid who eats out 4 times a week?! As a child, eating out was a treat! It was something we did once in a while and was a special time.

Re: ripped from the headlines
It does sound like a lot, eh? I don't know many elementary-age kids...but that was certainly not the norm in my family!

We sound like a couple of professional fogies.  Smiley

Re: ripped from the headlines
hahah we do sound like a couple of fogies for sure.
"back in the day...." That was not the norm in my family either. Maybe with the public realizing how severe things are getting, times will change. What else baffles me is the fact that so many people are trying to lose weight by going on these t.v. shows/challenges and are losing the weight. So many families have succeeded. How many will it take for anyone to see the difference in the nation? How many people need to wake up and realize their health is jeopordizing their life? I can only hope that the trend continues and people keep on doing these things.
