Godwin's law states:

As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison to nazis or Hitler approaches one.

This is, I'm afraid to say, inevitable. I've seen it a dozen times myself. You probably have as well. You could be talking about Simpsons Vs Family Guy, Apply Juice vs. Orange Juice, abortion vs. adoption... it doesn't matter. Eventually, someone will bring in the Nazis.

Why is this? I think it is because Hitler and the Nazis are the closest things to pure human evil that recent history has to offer and the majority of people know who Hitler was and what he did. Therefore, if  you want something to be bad, you associate it with the worst things in your mind.  E.T. the Extraterrestrial  on Atari, Baby Geniuses 2,  Ed Wood, etc... but worse than all of those (except maybe E.T. on atari) is Hitler and the Nazis. And unlike our fictional bogeymen, Hitler was real, and is a constant reminder of the evils that mankind unchecked can bring upon itself.

Re: Godwin's Law
You know, Hitler had a "friends list" which he called the Einzatsgruppen...

Dude, I have E.T. on Atari. A little weird. What was with that jail anyway? I also have Spider Man. That game is much cooler. You have to swing over the bad guys to wipe out their bombs that will throw you off the tower you're ascending.

Worst game ever on Atari? It's not E.T. Not by a long shot. Some game about Taxes. I don't even remember what the premise was. It was a white screen and dollar signs that showed up that you had to run up to. There weren't any bad guys (I assume those would have been average citizens in that messed up game) or a time limit.

Tax Avoiders. Uh, yeah, great game.

Re: Godwin's Law
I  don't know. I had E.T. on Atari... the game was frustrating... you just keep falling into holes. It is famously known as the game that almost bankrupted Atari. haha.

But, Tax Avoiders is definitely bad. haha.

Hang onto that game, dude.  Most of the E.T. copies were actually buried in the middle of a desert when it tanked.  I'm betting that cartridge is pretty darn rare.

Uh, yeah. I see that one sold for seven cents on eBay. Oooh... goldmine.

Re: Godwin's Law
yeah, it's still not rare... unfortunately it flooded the market and tanked. haha.

Re: Godwin's Law
whoa, that is cool. I'm going to have to watch this. I didn't know as a kid that this game sucked, I just thought it was hard and I was stupid.

...

So I did watch it. Turns out that, because I probably never had the manual, I didn't understand the symbols on the screen, and even if I did, it was nearly inpossible to beat while sane. Getting out of those holes was hard! haha

You know, only a nazi would think this would be a bad thing.

Re: Godwin's Law
I don't think that people bring up Hitler and the Nazis because they represent evil. I think that, more than anything else, it is a statement that gets a reaction.

For instance, I have been guilty of this myself. I have, perhaps, not been as negative towards nationalist socialism as most. But I went to a liberal university on Long Island in NY. This meant, by default really if you know the area, that there was a high jewish population.

I had several middle east focus classes, it was the focus of my history minor, and the professor made a comment to me one time that I was a terrible debater. Not because I couldnt form, hold, and defend an argument but rather because, unnecesarily, I would say things to anger the "opponent" just so that they would lose their focus and the argument would turn into something unrelated. He told me that I would have a valid point but I would see them start to get frustrated and just attack for no reason. Just because I like to piss people off I guess...

my favorite topics: either hitler and the nazis or a pro-palestinean stance on the two state problem. These two issues bring up instant emotion and controversy. You know that you are going to start a discussion when you lead off with... Fine. But if the movements of the 60s are ok, then why do we demonize hitler- why is Black Power, Brown Power, Jewish Power, etc etc ok but White Power is not? lol the reaction in a room half full of Jews is... entertaining.
