For two years I have been growing moss on the north patio to my house. today I finally harvested it and  draped it over rocks and the stone lantern top and around the pitcher plant. It involves putting on industrial grade knee pads, taking a kitchen scraper and  on hands and knees slowly lifting off sections of it in sheets. the parts that crumble can be put in an old blender  ( I have one I use for paper making) with a tab of buttermilk or yogurt and poured over the places you hope it to take hold.

Now moss very much has a mind of it's own and it will either take or not take and obviously you need a damp shady spot for it. But to me it is one of nature's wonders and I have loved cultivating it and then using it to "age" the water area I built near the front door. I can't understand that people buy herbicides to kill this stuff. After I get most of the stuff up I will power wash the front patio and it will be spiffy and ready for a new crop of moss in a few years.

Re: moss
I just love moss.

A few years ago i saw a feature on a landscape artist in England who would light wood on fore and get it charcoalish and then keep it damp to have the moss grow quicker. In one bush he tied trees down in kind on an arch ( like a boat upside down. A fire was carefully managed from inside until the bark was like charcoal. Then the wood was dampened and over years became mossy. The art now changes as the trees slump and die and new trees come growing up through the middle.

My parents have a large woods where I would love to do things like this with my Dad if I still lived there. He played around with a dead tree last year carving a face in it and then has been trying to get moss to grow for a beard and hair.

Re: moss
i love the idea of a dead tree being a nursery for other living things. I layed down a small alder in my back yard for just that purpose.

Re: moss
Gorgeous idea.

About 15 years ago there was an artists project in a conservation area near here where several of those things were attempted.

Re: moss
Clever girl.  We have beautiful moss growing in the farthest point of our back yard.  Prior to its growing there, we had just dirt.  I never thought of cultivating moss.

Re: moss
YOu are so damned creative and knowledgeable, my Arctic friend.  And I notice you have rain in this photo?  Wow, we could use some here.  We had 5 fires during that heatwave.  It went down into the 40s at night though.  Today it's climbed again.  I LOVE  YOUR GARDEN!!!  As soon as I get a chance, I promise, I will put some of my photos of the gardens up.  Maybe now, while I'm waiting for B.

Re: moss
yes. water. rain. good. it was in the 60's today with drizzles on and off. which my moss loves. but now I am faced with the dilemma of how to make the north patio less "ugh looking" I have two large potted arrangements out there and two butterfly chairs and  little black tables but I would want it to look more like an outdoor living room --- but no cushions as I don't want to deal with the cushions and rain. I saw a nice iron settee table and two chairs in a old fashioned rose pattern but do I dare spend $400. ?   I have tried the green garden swings and the adirondacks but they all look better elsewhere. and the  outdoor dining room table needs to stay under the deck because we eat out there every night rain or shine from june to october. Any ideas?  I don't like outdoor wicker and they always need cushions.

Re: moss
Could you take a picture for me?  Is that the upstairs one?  I am horrible with directions, so wouldn't know north from south.  I heard that of all places (I know, you guys don't like the place because of times past) Safeway had some fantastic iron tables and chairs for half price.  HGTV (online) just had something about outdoor living rooms.  I'll go see if I can find it and send it to you.  Bill is almost home and I have to work at Hospice tomorrow, plus another thingie in the afternoon, so I might not be online again til tomorrow night.

Re: moss
I like moss, too. Particularly when it's near the roots of trees. Reminds me of my childhood when I would find small dead bugs (for example, crickets) and feel bad that they hadn't had a burial so I'd pull up some moss and burry them beneath it.
