Great post! I feel the same way - and it's ridiculous that so many cities actually have zoning laws requiring a certain percentage of lawn in your front yard... I think mine is at the bare minimum - I prefer flowers and groundcovers too! =)
I'm with you on this. I've torn out half of our front lawn to plant shrubs and perennials, and half of our property is wooded. The new house will be about the same proportions...or even less lawn if I can get away with it.
Count me among the lawn dissidents. I'd rather have a pumpkin patch in front of my house. But I don't like to fuss with flowers and pruning either. If God had wanted lawns and gardens on the prairie, he would have but them here by jove.
i am a huge fan of japanese culture, having lived there for so long. i'd rather have rock and sand and water gardens, with stepping stones and creeping varieties of plants in my yard.....veggie and herb garden and flowering plants/shrubs/trees. i could do just fine without a lawn mower.....the edge of the yard will be sand, for the volleyball court. *g*
I just stocked a book in our store called "How to get your lawn off grass". Also, look up "Food, Not Lawns".
I live in the damned desert and people still feel a need to have their green grass that soaks up water and does nothing positive for the area... There are native grasses here that rock, and are much prettier - but they just GOTS to have that cookie cutter green green lawn.
Keep up the good fight -
