tomorrow I won't be online as friends from seattle are coming down. she is surviving stage four breast cancer and has turned her life into a walking blessing. so here are my thoughts on memorial day one day early.

having grown up in a beach town on the north shore of long island, memorial day was a big deal.  this meant school was over and the official beach season opened.  The day was marked with a morning parade, where veteran's marched ( some from WW1) and we all wore red paper poppies and waved small  flags. It seemed uniquely american and small town wonderful as afterwards there were back yard barbecues before we hit the beach. Braving the frigid water of long island sound was an ordeal and even when we turned blue and our teeth chattered we insisted we were not cold when admonished by the adults to come out of the water and warm up.  It also meant lightning bugs were not far away in time and that the barefoot days and late nights playing kick the can or "spud" were right on the horizon.

We didn't think about the people maimed or killed in war. we just thought about a lot of very well postured old guys talking about their war buddies. and of course at ten years of age none of it really sank in. But looking back to the trivial markers we , as children,  put on that weekend seems to strengthen my faith in being an American even when our government gets it all wrong. So while I intensely dislike Bush and his fascist cronies, I  thank all the men and women who served our country, gave limbs and lives and eyes and marriages and peaceful sleep for our country and people and I take a moment of silence and deep reflection about the human capacity to help, forgive, rebuild and prevail. And I hope Flander's Field is covered with poppies. I know mine are growing and doing well.

Great post!  Gave me goose bumps, which usually only happens when I hear a song that I love.  Voted!

Very heartwarming. I totally agree and I am glad that you expressed it so well for all of us.

Great post, dd.  Sorry I didn't see it before.

How was your visit?  Wow, didn't realize your company was in stage 4.  Hope you had a really healing time for her.  The patio is stupendous!!!

BTW, my niece IS coming, after all.  In a wheelchair.  So, one baby, one 33 year old and one 50 year old in a wheelchair.  But it will be lovely.  I adore this family, as you know.  These are the Memphis clan - oldest daughter of my beloved sister who is no longer with us, her daughter (my sister's granddaughter) and the 2 year old (almost 2 so actually she's a toddler, 4th child of my 33 year old great niece!!!)

I will do that, dear.  These are 2 women, and they are both very giving and sensitive.  And B adores little girl toddlers.    Enjoy Sex and the City, if it has opened???

But you didn't tell me how your visit went this past weekend.  I really hope it was wonderful.  When are your next people coming?  Isn't it the same time as mine?

Oh man, I can't believe you went to Baja!!!

Have an incredibly wonderful time with your friends.  I am finishing some painting of trim in the bathroom, and doing a little cleanup in the smallest bedroom, for my niece to stay there.  A few other finishing things too, like I need to fill out my voting form.  And clean up the digital camera, making some space for some new photos of family!   But I am getting there.  And your place is most likely all spruced up for company.  However, damn, this weather has been horrible.  No sunshine in ages.  Very overcast and cold here.

That dinner sounds WONDERFUL.  Whooo hooo...

Poor Abster.  Podster is going to hide all next week, I am sure.  But I've discovered where his new hangout is located:  behind the barn waaaaay in the back of the property.  It's quiet back there and the Bitchess (Calamity) won't bug him up there.

Yeah, I want to have a fire too, but it makes so much mess I'll wait til company is here to do that.   I have to thoroughly dust on Sunday anyway, but after that, I'll just warn folks that dirt is good for the soul.

We are eating very simply.  My family, and all the folks I knew back east from my old life, can't stand anything that has any bite to it, or sauces, or anything.  Not even Chinese!  Where did I come from dd?  I always thought I was an alien implant...love you
