I was reading my Grimm's Fairy tales at night again...(yes I do that since no one reads it to me:() and I actually read the one I posted below more than once...it always unnerves me.  I know that a lot of the fairy tales were not even meant to be fairy tales, at least not intended for children.  There are some fairy tales nowadays famous among children, and yet full of sexual references which had been either altered from the original, or there is but we just fail to see it, e.g. Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White, and Sleeping Beauty...(and they say we of this generation have a dirty mind!). Anyway, I don't want to get into that right now.  This particular story I posted below is pretty straightforward however, that is why  it never fails to stirr me.  But...I couldn't imagine telling this to my child as a bed time story.

Sharing Joy and Sorrow

There was once a tailor, who was a quarrelsome fellow, and his wife, who was good, industrious, and pious, never could please him. Whatever she did, he was not satisfied, but grumbled and scolded, and knocked her about and beat her. As the authorities at last heard of it, they had him summoned, and put in prison in order to make him better. He was kept for a while on bread and water, and then set free again. He was forced, however, to promise not to beat his wife any more, but to live with her in peace, and share joy and sorrow with her, as married people ought to do. All went on well for a time, but then he fell into his old ways, and was surly and quarrelsome. And because he dared not beat her, he would seize her by the hair and tear it out. The woman escaped from him, and sprang out into the yard, but he ran after her with his yard-measure and scissors, and chased her about, and threw the yard-measure and scissors at her, and whatever else came his way. When he hit her he laughed, and when he missed her, he stormed and swore. This went on so long that the neighbors came to the wife’s assistance. The tailor was again summoned before the magistrates, and reminded of his promise. “Dear gentlemen,” said he, “I have kept my word, I have not beaten her, but have shared joy and sorrow with her.”

“How can that be,” said the judge, “when she continually brings such heavy complaints against you?”

“I have not beaten her, but just because she looked so strange I wanted to comb her hair with my hand; she, however, got away from me, and left me quite spitefully. Then I hurried after her, and in order to bring her back to her duty, I threw at her as a well-meant admonition whatever came readily to hand. I have shared joy and sorrow with her also, for whenever I hit her I was full of joy, and she of sorrow, and if I missed her, then she was joyful, and I sorry.” The judges were not satisfied with this answer, but gave him the reward he deserved.

Re: Sharing Joy and Sorrow
well, unfortunately, many people look at life from this perspective. Good is bad and bad is good..

Hmm... Do you think that the stories and movies for children are the cause of the dirt of people's minds? Are you against the fact that Snow White is kissed by her prince (and that children are allowed to see it?)..that's just a example..

Re: Sharing Joy and Sorrow
Oh no no, I don't mind Snow White being kissed in front of kids.  Thats very natural, and see for me that is far from the wrong.  Its when people deny there are sexual inuendos involved, if its staring right in your face, that is just plain and simple denial.  That is okay though, because literature is all about interpretation anyway. Which is why it is probably a good idea to alter it slightly to suit for children.  But imagine if they don't, for example this story I posted.  I would never tell it to my children, and not because I want to hide reality but because they would see reality as they grow up annyway.  Bed time stories are to make them safe...

As for the dirt in people's minds...well I hate it when people see sexual references when it simply isn't there!  That really pisses me off, but as for vice versa....its a choice to see things that may not be there.

Re: Sharing Joy and Sorrow
Oh yeah it makes me mad! They do it all the time on tv, the French tv. They really enjoy it, as if it was the only way to attract the attention of people.. (well, now, we can say it is..!)

Re: Sharing Joy and Sorrow
I think a lot of people have heard these fairy tales so many times that they ignore what they are really saying.

Here's something somewhat related that I've always found interesting...

The poem, Ring Around the Rosie...it's actually about the Plague.  But I'm betting you already knew that!

And what about 'Rock abye Baby'??  Who the hell would read that to their child???

Re: Sharing Joy and Sorrow
Yeah....also like London bridge is falling down and recently in my french class we were discussing France's national anthem....they words are just horrifying, with the graphic and violent details!  And to think little children have to sing it everday in assembly...sigh!  What can ya do?

Re: Sharing Joy and Sorrow
Remember the other one we read when you first got the book? It was horrifying! I agree that it's misconception that fairytales are for children. Maybe the modern ones are, but the originals aren't. And how come it got such a nice name, "fairy tale"?
Starrish on
Re: Sharing Joy and Sorrow
Yeah...if you mean by modern the ones written now...well I guess they have to write with extreme caution, in fact its quite a nuisence!  Remember the fuss about the purple tellitubby, Tinky Winky was gay?  I thought it was ridiculous how someone could say that, because I watch that show quite often and I never noticed anything particularly queer.  And yes a lot of the older versions of some famous fairy tales have been slightly altered to tone down the sexual references that might have been too explicit.   I dunno why this one is even under a fairy tale either...I see no quality that to me defines a fairy tale.  Hows u bon bon?  When r ur classes over anyway?  Mine r finished tomorrow but only if I live through the night...have a ghastly french project/essay to present tomorrow.  You know I can't even speak english in front of people, so just imagine me doing it in French!
