The result of the welfare/warfare state. Get out your checkbook. And get out your children's checkbooks.
Welfare state? So why are countries like England and France doing so well? This has very little to do with welfare. It's the Bush administration's spending habits.
If you looked at the PDF file I had a link to, (http://budget.senate.gov/democratic/charts/2007/FS_Budget%20Criticisms_111507.pdf) you would see that the second slide down shows that there was a GIANT leap in how much spending was done, while our revenues have pretty much not changed (see third slide). In six years, the national debt has jumped $3.1 Trillion dollars (4th slide).
Can welfare cause the national debt to rise, which a big chunk is now foreign held (slide 5)? I would say no. It's clearly the irresponsible spending of the war. All these government contract deals are bullshit.
Instead of buying a spare wheel for a supply truck in Iraq, they just replace the whole damn thing. Haliburton charges $90 to wash a load of laundry.
Oh, and it really didn't help that the Republicans in charge of the Senate Budget Committee didn't have a budget for 3 of the last 5 years.( http://budget.senate.gov/democratic/statements/2007/fs_bushfiscalrecord_paygo_farmbill_trans111607.pdf)
(4th paragraph down)
I know that libertarians aren't fans of welfare, but this is hardly a welfare issue. Our government didn't know how to manage our money under the Republican led Congress (did you know what they did to pay-go?).

Sorry, that first link should lead you to this: http://budget.senate.gov/democratic/charts/2007/FS_Budget%20Criticisms_111507.pdf
I didn't mean to imply that it was a 50/50 split.
We need to cut spending in all areas.
But yes, the military adventures and contracts are outrageous.
And they want more!!
