What is permanent?

I think music is permanent. At least, to a great extent. You can't really destroy music. You can erase a tape, delete a song, or just not listen to it, or forget about it, but it is never truly gone. Unless of course every recording ever made of it is lost or erased, and all of the people who made it or dead, but still there might always be someone who will remember it, and will be there to play it. But for the most part, I believe music is pretty well permanent. And I like that. I don't think there are many things that are really permanent. A photograph can get destroyed, as well as the copies, and it might not be capable of reproduction. And as far as I've been thinking, the only other thing that is permanent seems to be the damage we've done to this poor planet... >.>

What are your thoughts? What is permanent? What does permanent mean? Is anything really ever permanent? Do you think music is permanent, if so, anything else? If not, what is?

Music, Agreed.

Other Than That...I Don't Know...

Re: What is Permanent?
Yes... even though it can be destroyed, it would take an awful lot of work. To get rid of all music everywhere, every single copy, every page of notes, etc. It can depend on whether we think of one single song, or music in general. I think for sure, music in general is permanent. There will always be music in some form, but I think also specific music is pretty permanent, too. It's interesting to think about, eh?

Steel is, on second thought can steel rust?

Gee, great question.

Now my lunch will be plagued with thoughts of what is permanent.

Thanks D!

LOL

Music isn't, you said the music was destroyed.  Someone remembering it may not remeber it in it's totality, complete format, may forget a note or two.

I'll be checking in constantly now to read the answers of others.

Good day,

Re: What is Permanent?
I think it can...hmm.

Haha : D

But I guess, as I mentioned in another reply, we must consider if we mean in general, as music in its entirety, or a specific piece. Hmm.. And even if it cannot be reproduced, isn't, if we still remember it, still permanent in our minds? What is permanence.. what is considered permanent? How do we test it?

Re: What is Permanent?
How do we measure it?

Permanence?
Hmmm?
Something that never goes away: like certain EX girlfriends, the memory of the worst smelling professor in the world!
bad memories
good memories
FUCK! Even permanent dye isn't permanent, you can bleach that shit out!
I logged in almost 2:00am as I thought I'd find that you'd found some permanence, some freaking where!

But for some, even memories aren't permanent.

Re: What is Permanent?
Yeah. I considered memories, but they aren't always permanent, either.

So nothing is Permanent!
DAMN!

Re: What is Permanent?
Yeah, if you think about it in an absolute way. Nothing is. Although nothing is certain, we cannot be certain that nothing is certain.

Re: What is Permanent?
It does rust, but slowly - cars are usually steel. Steel is an alloy of Iron and somethin else (and involves carbon somewhere) - that alloy is more stable than regular iron, so is less inclined to react, but still Iron(III)oxide (rust) is more stable still.
Paint coats slow down rust by creating a barrier between the metal and the oxygen, but paint cracks and fallsa off with temperature, and water accelerates rusting by dissolving oxygen and to a small degree carry loose rust away + erode

Gravity is permanent? As far as I know anyway, it'd be very interesting if laws of physics did change with time

Yeah, music is powerful, and inspiring, I'm not sure why it affects the mind, but animals seem to like it too. Interestingly I don't remember anything melodic in a dream, but I have had the words to music in dreams.
The data records of music may outlive humanity (at least on sealed things like harddrives), but if there's nobody to appreciate it, all forms of art and beauty (and history, and information) become nothing more than the material they're made of - but it wouldn't matter, because nobody would be there to regret it's loss

Re: What is Permanent?
And there comes "what defines permanence"? Is it permanent if it is still there, but is it permanent if no one remembers it, even if it still exists on a recording? Or is it permanent even if no recording exists but it stays forever in peoples' minds...

Re: What is Permanent?
Sounds like a definition thing.
Materially, it'll exist without anyone there if there's a physical record...
.... but it won't have any meaning without someone to interpret it
MIf you consider thoughts and memories to be physical (since the arrangement of nerves is physical, and electrical charges are made of ions/electrons which are physical) - then a memory is a physical record too, but one that if not passed on will become corrupted very quickly after death, that is providing no afterlife (who knows? - but it'd have to fit around science)
Subconcious memory seems to last indefinitely in a living person, but requires prompting. Stuff becomes more natural when it's subconcious knowledge, which I think is why people can become good at something but not able to recall all the ideas that got them there

It really is hard to say.

Time is too vast I think to say anything is permanent. Sooner or later, everything will be forgotten. Music, pictures, memories.

That is why I think we need to live for today, not saying we shouldn't an interest in saving the planet and such, we need to extend it as much as we can. I just mean we should live everyday as if is was our last. Eat, drink and be happy.  Follow your heart and your dreams.

I think anyway.

Re: What is Permanent?
Or is time too vast for something not to be permanent? what if everything that happens relates to another, and makes another thing happen, and that is permanent. Is time permanent? I think the past is permanent, because it has happened, but any recollection of it isn't necessarily, just like a memory. But even if something is forgotten, it can still exist and continue, therefore making it permanent.

I suppose there is also relative permanence, such as events in our lives (death of a friend, birth of a child, etc.). It can never be undone. I think that's pretty permanent. Perhaps permanent doesn't mean it lasts forever.

I think something really needs to be done about the planet, actually. And I think the planet's needs are far more important than our own pleasures. And what about people without clean drinking water, without food. How do they "eat, drink and be happy"? I'm sorry, I just firmly believe that with so much resources, there should be no reason why someone should have to starve. There's no excuse. I also think the people who have yet to live on this planet are also important, and they need our help so we don't ruin this world for them.

It also comes down to my hate of machinery in which we do not need, that only make our lives easier to do all the work for us, and of people in general.

On another note, my heart has often led me in the wrong direction. >.<

Scars are permanent....certain Scars are...it's the people that aren't..lol....

how are you?

DarkSalem on
Re: What is Permanent?
Yes they are. They will always be, until we decay.

I'm okay, you?

Re: What is Permanent?
pretty fucked up the one thing we've found to be so....are SCARS!

i'm okay today also.

Re: What is Permanent?
It's still only relative permanence, though. Some major injuries, losing a leg, being paralyzed, etc. Are also permanent in the same relativity. They also cannot be undone.

Re: What is Permanent?
yeah.....and even more fucked up.....damn...how come that wonderful feeling of happiness or the boy you love/d...or love itself.....or...pleasure.....why can't those be permanent?
DarkSalem on
Re: What is Permanent?
Feelings are never permanent...as we have seen, most things aren't.

Re: What is Permanent?
so then what is...the fact that nothing is permanent is permanent....oh...and scars....
DarkSalem on
Re: What is Permanent?
Nothing is absoultely permanent, but some things have relative permanence, I think.
